[WHEN PHONES WERE FUN: MOTOROLA STARTAC]

To understand why the Motorola StarTAC became one of the most popular cellphones of all time, it helps to remember that before it came along … “mobile” phones? Well, they were basically bricks with sticks attached. And not too long before that, they were literally the size of a suitcase!

So when the Motorola StarTAC hit the scene in 1996 (twenty-five years ago!), sporting a footprint smaller than an audio cassette and a design straight outta Star Trek? Well, to say it upended the entire industry would be a massive understatement. From clip-on accessories to unauthorized sequels to lawsuit-spawning knockoffs to branded companion products to bizarre revivals as late as the mid-oughts … it’s no exaggeration to say, 60 million sales later, that the Motorola StarTAC launched the era of fun phones.

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN – MOTOROLA STARTAC]

This is the fourteenth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world’s most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.

When Phones Were Fun: Episode 14 features several Motorola StarTAC devices: one model 7868W from MrMobile’s family archives (thanks, bro); one apparently authentic Rainbow StarTAC 70; one counterfeit/re-engineered Rainbow StarTAC 130; and a variety of StarTAC-themed accessories purchased by MrMobile / Future plc. Motorola arranged an interview with Glenn Schultz, Product Development Leader, as a courtesy, but did not pay a fee or otherwise offer compensation in exchange for this coverage (nor did it preview or approve this content before publication). The lone sponsor of this video is Surfshark.

OnePlus 9 Pro Review: Moon Mission

[ONEPLUS 9 PRO REVIEW]

OnePlus. For years following its 2014 debut the name alone conjured excitement among phone fans – first for value, then for features, and more recently a kind of middle ground between the two. Unfortunately for OnePlus, the words “excitement” and “middle ground” seldom go together … so this year, the company put another name on the only part of its new phone that “sticks out.”

To see whether that hump lives up to the hype of the 180-year-old brand name etched upon it, I drove 700 miles to the mountains of North Carolina so I could point the OnePlus Hasselblad … at another Hasselblad: a near-perfect replica of one of the most important cameras of all time — the one that brought us photos from the moon. I’m MrMobile and this is the Road Trip Review for the OnePlus 9 Pro!

Onyx Boox Nova3 Color Review: Android On E Ink!

A few months ago I reviewed my first color e-reader, the PocketBook Color. And while it was novel to use a tablet that blended all the benefits of e-paper with the universal appeal of color … it was also quite limiting to be locked into a platform that only let me run a handful of preloaded apps (and forced me to sideload most of my books because it didn’t support Amazon Kindle.)

Fortunately for me, you folks are a vocal audience. Littering the comments of that PocketBook video were repeated suggestions to test out a “BOOX”-branded e-reader from a company called Onyx International. As Sacha Segan of PCMag puts it, Onyx “makes E Ink tablets that bridge the gap between Kindles and iPads,” and it does so in this case by blending the newest color E Ink screen on the market … with my very own operating system of choice. This is the Android-powered, E Ink Kaleido Plus-enabled Onyx Boox Nova3 Color: join me for the MrMobile review!

[ROG PHONE 5 ULTIMATE REVIEW]

Just like it says on the exquisitely crafted box, the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate from ASUS is indeed the “ultimate” gaming smartphone of 2021. And not just by default, after the exit of Razer from the gaming phone space and the paucity of gaming-centric competitors in the North American market. No, the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate is the king of gaming phones because of a potent combination of perks, polish … and panache. It’s a gaming phone that even filthy casuals like MrMobile can love – and love it, I do.

The OnePlus Hasselblad Hype: A Lesson In Licensing

If you’ve been on tech Twitter this week you may have noticed a bevy of bloggers and YouTubers sharing selfies with freeze-dried ice cream, sent over from smartphone maker OnePlus. I got one too: a phone-sized box packed with “a crunchy and creamy snack, ready to eat anywhere on the planet.” And more important than the way it tastes is why it’s freeze-dried in the first place: because it’s ostensibly “space ice cream”, a.k.a. ice cream for astronauts.

Why is OnePlus suddenly struck with space fever? The answer has to do with the company’s historically underwhelming smartphone cameras; an historically much more prominent camera company called Hasselblad; and OnePlus’s shrewd understanding of just how valuable licensing can be. Join me to see just how excited you should (or shouldn’t) be, in this MrMobile editorial video.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 Review: The Best-Looking Chromebook, Rebooted

[SAMSUNG GALAXY CHROMEBOOK 2 REVIEW]

As the name implies, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 is Samsung’s follow-up to last year’s Galaxy Chromebook … but contrary to what you’d expect, this is not a sequel in the proper sense. Because as Android Central points out: almost everything on this machine is actually a downgrade from the original.

Last year’s 4K AMOLED screen takes a step down to a Full-HD QLED; the storage and the camera count are cut in half; the Intel processors drop by a grade at each trim level; and the embedded S Pen and fingerprint sensor are deleted wholesale. While the chassis that carries all this is still available in the signature “Fiesta Red,” it’s also slightly thicker and heavier than the first one.

In short: this is a midrange reboot of the original, and from one point of view it’s a much more reasonable computer. After all, Chromebooks have built a big part of their success on being the better value, and by eliminating all of the sweeteners from last year’s thousand-dollar model, Samsung has dropped the entry price of the Chromebook 2 to a more palatable $549 … or in the case of my higher-end review unit, a buck short of $700. But in the very competitive thick middle of the ChromeOS market, is that enough of a discount to make the Galaxy Chromebook 2 a contender? Watch Michael Fisher’s review to find out!

When Phones Were Fun: The Xelibri Experiment (2003)

Imagine sitting down to breakfast with one of the biggest companies in the world and being told this:

“We need to do something bold, something nobody expects. I will give you a budget, personnel, marketing, products, prices and distribution. All I want from you is to go out and change the world!”

The year was 2002, the place was Munich’s Hotel Bayerischer Hof and the man with the sweet ‘stache was Rudi Lamprecht of German tech giant Siemens, whose mobile division was at the time the world’s fourth-largest cellphone maker. The man on the other side of the table was George Appling, an American consultant whose acceptance of that offer would lead to what he once called “the greatest job imaginable.” Appling’s team would go on to build a family of cellphones unlike any the world had yet seen (promoted by a set of commercials the likes of which I hope never to see again)!

But just two years later, this journey into “tomorrow” would be cut short – and a year after that, with its phone division losing 1.5 million euros per day, Siemens abandoned a twenty-year legacy and left the mobile space entirely. This is the story of some of the weirdest cellphones the world has ever seen: the story of Xelibri.
