The end of the third season of Stranger Things was game-changing, to say the least. By the time the credits rolled, we learned that El had lost her powers and Hopper is missing in action, possibly even lost to us forever. But why did El loser her powers?

El is a pretty powerful psychic and has proven herself a total butt-kicker when it comes to fighting demons and stopping the bad men. She can also use her powers to find people and these powers keep getting stronger and stronger. During the fight with the Spider Monster in the season three finale, part of the Mind Flayer latched itself into El’s leg. Using a whole bunch of her power reserves, El was able to extra the monster from her, but from that point on, she was unable to use her powers. Even three months later in the epilogue, there were no powers.

At the same time, Hopper tried closing the gate to the Upside Down and seemingly passed at the same time. We have to imagine that Hopper is still alive but without El’s powers, we have no way of knowing and neither does El, adding tension for the fourth season due on Netflix in the future.

We can likely assume that the fourth season will venture into the Upside-Down and will see El and the party searching for Hopper, which may directly or indirectly be tied to her powers. At the same time, Dr. Brenner may also play a role in what’s to come, culminating in the battle of the fathers for El.
