Pixel Fold Review: The Price Isn’t The Point

[GOOGLE PIXEL FOLD REVIEW]

If you haven’t noticed, MrMobile has had a busy month. In the “hot foldable summer” of 2023, I find myself reviewing the most significant Android in ages, on short notice, while traveling … and folks, that’s exactly the kind of lifestyle the book-type foldable was made for.

For the past three and a half years, a Samsung Galaxy Fold has filled that need in my life – for a laptop when there isn’t space for a laptop; a tablet when a phone isn’t quite enough. Well, Google’s new Pixel Fold turns the equation on its side, in a way that’s been done before, yes – but this time the company doing it is the company that makes Android. That means this device is different (in ways both delightful and disappointing), and I think it was built to change the future of foldables.

Motorola RAZR+ Review: The Flip Phone You Don’t Need To Open

Small phones are dead. The iPhone mini is done for; Sony’s Xperia Compact is long gone; and even the Pixel A-series is a fairly big 6-inch candybar. Unless you want to import something like a Unihertz Jelly, the age of the miniature phone is over.

That is … unless you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, the Hinge.

Yes, it’s foldable time again – and Motorola’s new Razr+ is the very definition of the best of both worlds: it’s a clamshell flip phone that lets you spread out on a big 6.9-inch screen, then fold that screen in half to produce a phone that fits in almost any pocket.

“Sure,” you’re saying, “but so what? Flip foldables have been doing that for years.” Well, the thing that sets the Razr+ apart is how much it can do … without you ever needing to open it.

This video was produced following two weeks with a Motorola RAZR+ review unit provided by Motorola. Pre-production device running pre-release software.

In exchange for early content capture with the RAZR+ and a one-hour exclusive head-start on the review embargo, MrMobile provided Motorola with his first impressions of the device several weeks ago.

However, Motorola did not receive any feedback after review devices were seeded; the company is seeing this review at the same time as the general audience. No payment was provided and Motorola had no editorial input or copy approval rights concerning this review.

Google’s Pixel Tablet Is Only As Good As Its Assistant

Google has tried making cheap tablets, and it’s tried making expensive ones; it’s outsourced them, and it’s made them in-house; it’s built tablets for play and for work; it’s released laptops disguised as tablets, and vice versa. In fact, Google has tried tablets so many times, in so many ways, over so many years … that it’s actually officially given up on them at least once!

But what Google hasn’t tried is making a tablet that turns into a Google Nest when you put it down – until now. That’s what the Pixel Tablet is trying to be, and a week after welcoming it into my own “nest,” I think it’s a truly special idea. I just wish I could trust Google to stick with it.

[CORRECTION]

The Pixel Tablet will receive guaranteed Android platform updates until June 2026, and security updates through June 2028. The reason for the error: technical documentation provided with my review device stated platform support would only continue through “June 2023.” MrMobile regrets the error.

TicWatch Pro 5 Review: Double The Battery, Double The Displays

[MOBVOI TICWATCH PRO 5 REVIEW]

Early in the smartwatch wars, a company called Mobvoi carved out a following with a wearable called the TicWatch: a smart, low-profile timepiece controlled by a clever capacitive touch strip on the side. Even after ditching its homegrown TicWear platform for Google’s Wear OS, Mobvoi kept the attention of enthusiasts – because every year, it was among the first to use Qualcomm’s newest wearable chipsets, and it was the only manufacturer (outside of Casio) offering a dual-layer display to help with battery life and daylight visibility.

The TicWatch Pro 5 continues that tradition of hardware excellence … but it launches into a Wear OS world that’s oddly more fragmented than ever, and it debuts to an audience more skeptical than ever of Mobvoi’s commitment to its products. Is it worth paying the same as a Pixel Watch will cost you? I’m Michael Fisher and it’s time to find out.

[LENOVO YOGA BOOK 9i REVIEW]

Good version of a bad idea; bad version of a good idea; good versions of many forgettable ideas. Lenovo’s done it all over its thirty-nine years in business – and honestly? I expected the Yoga Book 9i (first seen at CES 2023) to land firmly in the “bad-bad” category.

Here’s what actually ended up happening: this became the first new PC concept in years that really enchanted me – without then disappointing me once I actually started using it. Turns out the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is a good execution of a surprisingly good idea!

Google’s Pixel Fold Is The Most Important Foldable In Years [Hands-On]

Sponsored by dbrand. Skin your Pixel Fold (or other device) here! https://dbrand.com/mrmobile-fold

[GOOGLE PIXEL FOLD HANDS-ON]

Even if 2023 ended tomorrow, it would have been a great year for foldables. TECNO launched the cheapest book-type folder ever; Huawei raised the bar for industrial design yet again; and Oppo and Vivo refreshed the flip-phone space with their own takes on the clamshell phone (all while the leaks suggest that the best in that category is yet to come).

But none of those are as crucial to the future of foldables as the phone I just spent two hours with at Google’s New York City offices. I’m Michael Fisher and this is a first look at the first foldable built by the people who make Android: the Google Pixel Fold!
