The Inspirations Behind The Batman

Step aside Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck; there is a new caped crusader inciting fear into the hearts of the criminals in Gotham and that man is Robert Pattinson. With the movie recently releasing in theatres, we were shocked at just how different this interpretation of the character was from all of the previous Batmen listed above.

So how exactly did Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeve’s create this specific corner of the DCEU? Well apparently he just was really a big fan of David Fincher’s works. C’mon, it doesn’t take the worlds greatest detective to catch the similarities with this movie and other films like Se7en and Zodiac.

That being said the references go much deeper, 1970’s classics like The French Connection and Chinatown served as inspiration for the criminal activity present throughout the Gotham PD. While much more obscure references were used to influence even the smallest of moments in the film like Stephen King’s Christine being the basis for this new Batmobile.

From music like Nirvana to comics like The Long Halloween, lets take a look into all the inspirations used to create The Batman, I promise it’ll be a good time! (That’s a little hint for later on in the video, stay tuned to find out more!)

What The Batman Sequel Could Look Like

Welp, the Caped Crusader has finally arrived back on our screens courtesy of Matt Reeves’ noir-influenced take on the Dark Knight, and boy howdy we are PUMPED for whatever comes next in this dark new continuity. So! Let’s take a look at what that future might have in store for us. Amongst these, we’ll take a moment to point out the confirmed future prospects for this continuity. All of this COULD still change, but — there are shows currently being worked on post-Batman. Considering it’s a big success critically and financially, seems like those are pretty much good to go. One is the Penguin spinoff starring and produced by Colin Farrell who I guess… just really likes sweating his butt off under prosthetics. Seeing as The Batman ends with the city flooding and a massive power vacuum in the wake of both that and the death of Carmine Falcone, it looks like the stage is set for Penguin’s rise to power in, I dunno, like an eight episode prestige HBO Max series. I’m into it. That interrogation scene with Os, Gordon, and Batman was borderline perfection — and a lot of that is down to Farrell’s performance. And the Penguin’s high school Spanish teacher or whatever. The other series is a Gotham PD spinoff.

Also, multiple peeps pointed out that the gang member going through his initiation is played by Jay Lycurgo — who is also in Titans, where he plays Tim Drake, aka… one of Batman’s many young, mentally scarred wards who’ve gone by the name Robin. Could it be that this young, impressionable dude is gonna turn his moral allegiances around and turn into the first Robin within this particular universe? In an interview, Lycurgo did mention that he shot his role in The Batman long before he even read for Drake, so chances are there’s nothing there beyond some light synchronicity. HOWEVER, there’s more than just that weird bit of casting to suggest a future Robin. Pattinson himself has expressed interest in getting himself a ward, specifically stating “Yeah, but he has to be 13. That’s the only way I’ll accept it. No, I love Death in the Family and stuff, but I think it’d be so cool. Also people are so scared of it, but it’s kind of exciting. I think it would be a really fun addition.” Of course this is R-Patz we’re talking about, so that could just be him, bored, joking around in an interview. He’s a bit of a wild card that way. Of course, this then suggests that MAYBE the son of the deceased Mayor could wind up being the new Robin.

The Batman: 25 Things You Missed

Batman fans have wanted a gritty, dark, gothic version (not to mention a detective thriller storyline) of the beloved caped crusader for some time now and Matt Reeves has finally delivered with his brilliant, moody yet beautiful (and of course rainy) The Batman movie. The movie uses some of the devices that made Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy so successful, but also implements it’s own things to become a winged beast of its own and it has the potential to be a trilogy as good (if not better) as Nolan’s work. What makes The Batman so good is that despite it being a very different Batman from what we’ve seen in live action before, it also pays homage to the comic books and in particular some of the most well known Batman graphic novels of all time. It also pays tribute to it’s on screen routes, with some actually surprising call backs to other times Bruce Wayne has been on screen.

In this video we will take a look at 25 things or so you might have missed in the movie. That will include the aforementioned references to the comic books (including graphic novels from the 80s all the way to the New 52), references to a number of rogues and villains in Bats’ gallery, nods to fictional locations in DC lore, potential setups for new character introductions and subtle references to fictional DC substances, the way it tributes the brilliant and campy 1960s Batman series starring Adam West, the classic movies that you may not have known inspired the movie, the famous rock band that was the inspiration for Bruce Wayne, and some behind the scenes trivia and facts that you may not have known. This is everything you missed in The Batman!

What did you make of the movie? Did you catch all of these? Any we missed? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to subscribe to the channel today for all this and more.
