When you watch a movie, you usually dive into the world and forget that you’re actually watching a production. When you see the behind the scenes set photos though, you get a peek behind the veil of what it was like as they were filming said movie.

Sometimes we learn that what we’re seeing on screen is nothing more than an illusion. Case in point? The hobbits in the Lord of the Rings trilogy are actually taller than their wizard counterpart, Ian McKellen! But thanks to movie magic, they seem smaller than he does in the movie. We can also see that in the Harry Potter films, the production moved the Dursley’s house into a controlled set as opposed to a real street. Then there’s the use of miniatures, such as the one that brought Russia to life in James Bond’s Goldeneye. And of course, sets don’t go on forever and we get a look at one of the most iconic Star Wars sets and what’s actually hiding outside of the frame.

Iconic and creepy creatures of film get far less spooky once you get to see the real them. Freddy Kreuger isn’t that bad as it turns out while the Xenomorph from Alien looks very different without the full costume. A fun director and actor moment from Silence of the Lambs shows just how much fun one can have when the cameras aren’t rolling. Then there are the CGI effects, such as Dan Steven’s hilarious motion-capture suit used in Beauty and the Beast. The Jungle Book and the Lion King both look very empty due to their set photos.
