Easter eggs and secrets are some of the most rewarding things in video games. Originally the achievements of old, uncovering secrets was a rite of passage only a select chosen few with either too much attention to detail or too much time on their hands could solve. Before the internet age, secrets and easter eggs were shared via word of mouth or sometimes discussed in gaming magazines. This would also lead to rumors being spread that would even find their way onto the early internet. It would go something like “Hey did you ever find a way to play as Luigi in Super Mario 64?” when in reality there is no way to play luigi in Super Mario 64 without using a hack or a cheat.

Today, secret levels are talked about almost instantly which takes a lot of the fun out of discovering them. However, sometimes a secret can be so good and astounding, it doesn’t matter if it was easy to find or not. We will be looking at a few of these secrets today from gaming’s greatest franchises.
