For a couple years in mid-2000s America, it was tough to go a day in public without hearing a very distinctive electronic “chirp.” It was the trademark tone of “Direct Connect,” a nationwide-walkie talkie built in to every cellphone bearing the “Nextel” nameplate. By 2004, Direct Connect had helped Nextel Communications amass nearly 20 million customers with some of the highest loyalty – and highest revenues – in the industry.

But less than two years later, the storied Nextel brand would crumble into a punchline, following a merger so devastating it almost sank the company that bought it. Join Michael Fisher to see what caused one of the most valuable brands in wireless to go from “getting things done” to just … Done. |

In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.

When Phones Were Fun: Episode 17 features a wide assortment of Nextel and Sprint Nextel handsets purchased by Michael Fisher and by MrMobile’s publisher, Future PLC. The epilogue features review devices on loan from AT&T FirstNet, Relay, and Aina. No manufacturer or carrier paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any such company preview or approve this content before publication.

Actors Who Injured Their Co-stars During Filming

For actors, commitment can make you legendary (I mean, it’s no accident that this list includes multiple Academy Award winners). Countless hours of training are aimed at making it so a performer can disappear into a role, both for the audience and for themselves. But the tricky thing about being lost in a role is that sometimes your character doesn’t know the fight choreography as well as you do, and your scene partner gets clipped in the jaw.

And this isn’t something only beginning actors do, even some of the most seasoned performers take and give it on the chin (see Joe Pesci to Macaulay Culkin), though often the real violence can be invited by the victim (see Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo; Christian Bale and Heath Ledger). The point is, acting in the world’s biggest movies and TV shows can be a precarious occupation, and whether it’s a prestige movie like The Wolf of Wall Street, a superhero flick like The Dark Knight, or a crazy popular TV show like The Walking Dead, sometimes punches find bodies.

So please, darling, for me, enjoy these 11 actors who injured their co-stars (and more interestingly, enjoy HOW these performers got hit, because the reasons and situations are all over the place).
