Famous Erupting Star System – Eta Carinae: Are There Twins Elsewhere?

Eta Carinae is the most luminous and massive star system known within 10,000 light years of the Sun. It is known for a dramatic eruption that was seen in the mid-19th century. An enormous amount of material was hurled into space – at least 10 times the mass of the Sun. Eta Carinae is visually stunning with gas and dust surrounding it, hiding the star within. No other object like it is known. However, now scientists may have found similar objects in other galaxies. Are they really Eta Carinae twins?... Read More | Share it now!

Paving the Way

This segment of the Hubble at 25 series discusses how the Hubble Space Telescope has not only given us a better understanding of our solar system, but it has also helped pave the way for interplanetary missions to be successful. By monitoring target destinations, Hubble has enabled spacecraft mission planners to optimize the science return from the planetary visits.... Read More | Share it now!

Weighing an Extremely Massive, Distant Galaxy Cluster

Astronomers combined data from three of NASA’s Great Observatories to make the most detailed study yet of an extremely massive young galaxy cluster. The object is a rare cluster of galaxies, which is located 10 billion light-years from Earth. It is almost as massive as 500 trillion suns. How are these huge structures formed in the universe? Tune in to find out. The galaxy cluster, called IDCS J1426.5+3508 (IDCS 1426 for short), is so far away that the light detected by the observatories originated when the universe was young, roughly a quarter of its current age. It is the most massive galaxy cluster detected at such an early age.... Read More | Share it now!
