Electric cars are being taken increasingly seriously at the Pikes Peak hill climb, and for 2013, Mitsubishi entered two MiEV Evolution II racing EVs, built specially for the infamous event. Piloted by Hiroshu Masuoka and Pikes Peak motorbike champion Greg Tracy, the aim was to be the first electric cars to smash the 10-minute barrier. Unlike the internal combustion cars, the EVs can still produce full power at high altitudes, so could they even climb the overall leaderboard?

Pikes Peak 2013 Startline: Randy Schranz’ Shelby Cobra

Matt Saunders’ Pikes Peak video blog: Randy Schranz has competed more than 35 times since 1972. His Shelby Cobra launches off the line.

Randy Schranz knows the 156 corners of the Pikes Peak hill climb better than most, having competed at the event 38 times before the 2013 event. His Shelby Cobra is entered in the Pikes Peak Open class and has around 850bhp. With its short wheelbase, controlling that power is no mean feat, and a large rear spoiler provides as much downforce as possible.

Pikes Peak 2013 startline: Mike Ryan’s Freightliner Special truck

Matt Saunders’ Pikes Peak video blog: Mike Ryan’s Freightliner Special racing truck launches off the line

Mike Ryan is racing a Freightliner Special truck in the 2013 Pikes Peak Open division. Despite its carbon and fibreglass body panels, it weighs in at just over five tonnes, meaning it needs a serious amount of power. With a 14-litre Detroit Diesel engine, that’s exactly what it has, mounted mid-ships in the chassis. With some serious turbocharging, water-methanol injection and water-cooled brakes, Ryan is hoping to get the truck up the hill in less than 12 minutes.

The oldest competitor in the 91st Pikes Peak hill climb is 72-year-old Ralf Murdock in his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro SS. And, if proof were needed that experience is everything at Pikes Peak, he broke the record for modified vintage cars with a time of 12 minutes 50 seconds, in a car built with the help of his kids. He started racing at Pikes Peak in 1965.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 tested by www.autocar.co.uk

Steve Sutcliffe reviews the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3. Could the 991 GT3 be the world’s best sports car?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

The 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 represents the zenith of the all-new 991 line-up, with its 3.8-litre delivering its 468bhp at a scintillating 8,250rpm. But, the 2013 GT3 is not without controversy. For a start, it’s bigger and heavier than the 997 GT3, tipping the scales at 1,430kg. But that hasn’t set the forums alight like the news there’s no manual gearbox, even as an option. Does the more civilised GT3 still represent motoring nirvana?

In this video, we go behind the scenes to find out how the Jaguar C-X75 was designed and engineered in collaboration with Williams. It’s powered by a 1.6-litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine as well as two electric motors, sending more than 800bhp to all four wheels. Acceleration to 100mph takes under six seconds.

Mercedes A45 AMG vs Volkswagen Golf GTI vs BMW M135i – hot hatch mega test – autocar.co.uk

We know the Mercedes A45 AMG is quick, but is it as good to drive as the hottest BMW 1-series, the M135i and Volkswagen Golf GTI?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

Having reviewed the Mercedes A45 AMG at its launch, we know its 355bhp engine makes it a real weapon, dispatching 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds. But, it’s also hugely expensive for a hot hatch, especially when you consider the thrills dished up by the slightly cheaper BMW M135i and much less expensive Volkswagen Golf GTI. Is the A45 AMG really good enough to justify its premium price, and how will it cope with the Welsh roads?

Six months after Jaguar announced the C-X75 hypercar would stay as a concept car and never go into production, Autocar thought this story was dead. But then, we got a call asking us to go and drive it and find out just how far Jaguar and Williams engineering had managed to push the envelope. With 390bhp of electric drive and a 500bhp twin-charged 1.6-litre petrol engine it will accelerate to 100mph in less than six seconds.
