There’s only so much information one can cram into a movie before it gets too bloated or full of exposition. So sometimes, no matter how awesome a scene may be, it gets left on the cutting room floor as opposed to the final cut of the movie. But Star Wars is unlike most media properties in that it has an expansive multi-media format to tell it’s stories, all on the same level of canon as the movies. So there is a slew of information that you can only find in the books, comics and visual dictionaries. They range from how Vader learned of Luke’s name to how Ben Solo learned that Vader was his grandfather. Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso both get some backstory in various books. We learned about the fate of the Gungans and Jar-Jar Binks and how Han and Chewie liberated Kashyyyk. We also learn why Yoda and other Jedi can’t sense Palpatine and see into the future very well in the prequels and even get to see Darth Bane get name-dropped in The Phantom Menace novelization. The newest books also detail what’s happening to the Falcon during the events of the new theme park, Galaxy’s Edge.
Critical information from the Last Jedi is also found in the books, such as the third lesson and a moment where Luke mourns the passing of Han. Holdo’s hair even gets detailed on the pages of the books! Smaller details like information on the Guavian Death Gang and Phasma’s armour are revealed in the visual dictionaries, along with information on the First Order’s arsenal. Poe Dameron’s escape from Jakku gets detailed in the comics while the actual battle of Jakku gets detailed in a few novels at this point. Justifications for the scarcity of U-Wings can be found in the books and Rio Durante’s backstory is detailed in the official guide to Solo: A Star Wars Story. Han Solo’s Imperial Cadet days was shot but could be read in the expanded novelization. Leia’ justification for not being a Jedi can also be found in the novel Bloodlines.
