The Sony MDR-1000X won’t win any fashion awards; it’s a bulky and very plain-looking headset, its cans studded with buttons. But what it lacks in style it makes up for in performance: I’ve used the Bose QC35, Sennheiser PXC-550 and countless other noise canceling headsets, and I can say with very little hesitation that the MDR-1000X has them both beat. These are the best noise canceling headphones of 2017 – or at least, the best wireless headphones that have been on *my* head in 2017 – and reviewing them has been a blast.
