من المثير للدهشة استمرار وجود هذا الكائن لمدة 30 مليون سنه وذلك على الرغم من ضعف حاسة البصر لديه بالاضافة إلى وداعته فهو يظهر بعضاً من العدائية فقط خلال فترة التزاوج ويعتبر هو أضخم كائن برمائى فى العالم إذ يصل طوله الى 2 متر ولكنه يبقى معظم الأوقات مختبئاً فى أوكاره تحت الماء

أغلب الكائنات التى ذكرناها استطاعت البقاء بسبب قدرتها على الصيد أو الاختباء , أما هذا الحيوان الصغير فلا يمتلك أى صفة جسدية مخيفة ولكن يرجع سبب بقائة لمدة 32 مليون عام على الارض لقدرته على أكل اى شىء بالاضافة إلى ذلك أسنانه الحادة المزودة بالسم فبرغم حركته البطيئة فوق الارض مما يجعله هدفاً سهلاً للصيد إلا أنه يستطيع إصدار أصوات مخيفة تشبة أصوات الخنازير عندما يشعر بالخطر
