It popularized the ultra-wide-angle camera; it offered replaceable batteries when others had phased them out; it even made a whole line of phones for YouTubers. So I shouldn’t be surprised that LG built a phone that works on weird wizard magic. But I kind of am. And I kind of think it was a mistake.

Two years ago, a Finnish company called HMD Global set up shop across the street from the old Nokia headquarters to resurrect one of the world’s most famous cellphone brands. Around the same time, an American company called Light built a crazy camera using multiple sensors to coax DSLR-like performance out of a smaller package. Today, these two companies have come together to produce an ambitious photography-focused smartphone. These are my first impressions from an afternoon with the Nokia 9 PureView.
