Soderbergh Takes a Butcher Knife to Heaven’s Gate – CineFix Now

Michael Ciminio’s Heaven’s Gate was released in 1980, weighing in at 216 minutes, and WAAAY too much money. Steven Soderburgh recently took a crack at cutting it to a more reasonable size. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm

Soderbergh’s “Butcher’s Cut,” is available to view at his Extension 765 site: http://goo.gl/YBBsau

It’s a very appropriate hour and 48 minutes long – that’s pretty much cutting it in half. Now, the original cut was the paragon of directorial excess, but was it 100% too excessive. We’ll be curious to see what the critics make of it.

Have you sat through the original Heaven’s Gate? Have you taken in the Butcher’s Cut? What did you think? Do you directors should always have the final cut, or are there cases where you think the producers should overrule them?
