As the scene continues, the children bring Picard a Christmas present as he marvels at the beauty of the tree. Picard eagerly opens his gift. The smallest boy remarks “It’s a SACK-tent!” Picard happily laughs and replies “Yes, it’s a sextant.” Inquiring where they obtained it, they reply “it’s a secret.” Picard declares that makes it a doubly-special gift. This scene is also available on the Special Edition DVD.

An alternate take of the Picard-Nexus scene as he is completely in awe of what he sees; a charming home and a loving family. Unsure of what to say, one of the children asks him to say Merry Christmas. He does, and the children happily cheer.

As the Enterprise slides along the surface of the planet, on the flame-engulfed bridge, Worf breaks open a panel on the wall and obtains some palm beacons, one of which he tosses to Data, who is attempting to protect Counselor Troi at the helm. Worf also picks up an injured crewmember and props him in Riker’s chair as Geordi checks on the kids.

In the science lab, a crewmember and a civilian scientist move breakable jars off of shelves while a school teacher leads a group of children to a safe location.
