iOS 6: Apple Maps REVIEW
Apple Maps iOS6 REVIEW
Although Apple still has a Google Maps license for the next 2 years, Apple decided to drop dead the good old fashion Google Maps. Here’s why:
-Google left the iOS Maps unchanged from 2007 when it was first launched, they kept updating it for Android devices but not for Apple devices
-Apple’s dispute with Google over patents (lawsuits and stuff like that)
Ok, now here are the pros and cons of the new Apple Maps
PROS:
-better design than Google Maps
-based on vectors instead of bitmap images which basically translates to smoother navigation, text doesn’t zoom out when zooming in, text rotation and manipulation is now possible and finally, the pages load a lot faster since there is just text that need to be loaded instead of images like there was on Google Maps
-Flyover (3D mode) is amazing
-Siri navigation is awesome and works while your phone is locked as well
-will be supported by Apple in the next couple of years unlike Google which dropped support for Google Maps in Apple devices
CONS:
-Flyover takes ages to load if you are not on 4G/Wifi
-Flyover ONLY works on the iPhone 4S/5 iPad 3 iPod Touch 5th gen
-Siri directions ONLY works on the iPhone 4S/5 iPad 3 iPod Touch 5th gen
-Street View is GONE (obviously since it was a Google product)
-VERY FEW places are supported, so for example FLYOVER only works for a couple of large cities in the US/UK, which is a shame
-some small cities do not even appear on Apple Maps
-some satellite views are obscured by clouds
CONCLUSION:
If you do not have an iPhone 4S/5 iPad 3 or an iPod Touch 5th gen, then simply DO NOT update to iOS 6….There isn’t much to it and you even lose some functionality with the new Maps application.
HOWEVER Google specified that they are going to release a Google Maps app in the next couple of weeks so stay tune for that app. Should be in the App Store no latter than November.

Meet the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field Observing Team
A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see. This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago.
Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.
Viewers participated in an online webinar and heard three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They illustrated and explained what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe.

PLEASE NOTE: If you attempt to duplicate this project, I suggest wearing THICK INSULATED RUBBER GLOVES, and using a piece of PVC TUBING for your chicken/safety stick. The gloves I wore, as well as the wooden safety stick, are poor insulators and I used them only because they were what I had on hand, and I was aware and comfortable with the risks, but I cannot recommend they will protect from electric shock. In any case, always keep one hand behind your back when dealing with HV to reduce the risk of an electrical current from traveling through your heart and sending you into cardiac arrest.
Project History & More Info:
By tapping into the secondary coil of an unmodified Microwave Oven Transformer (MOT), and hooking up to a makeshift diverging spark-gap, it’s possible to extract a visible short circuit!
These high voltage arcs are probably over an amp in current, and at over 1,000 volts, can be instantly fatal if touched.
As the arc is formed, the surrounding air is ionized and heated, causing the arc to rise. It will travel up the diverging spark gap, sometimes called a “Jacob’s ladder” until the arc is so weak it breaks.
This project is dangerous and isn’t of much practical use as far as I can tell, but was a way to visibly see electricity in plasma form.
Because the MOT is unballasted, you can expect the current draw to get so high that the breaker will trip every-time if allowed to continue for an extended period of time.
