When four-wheel drive just won’t cut it, you might need the Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6. That’s if you can afford its equally astonishing £350,000 price tag. This bespoke brute is fitted with a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 producing 536bhp and 560lb ft of torque. Despite weighing 3,775kg it can still hit 62mph in less than six seconds. Its top speed is limited to 100mph to protect the huge 37-inch off-road tyres. It’s derived from an Australian military vehicle, no less.

Don’t be fooled by its more humble roots underneath, paired with this power-train combination, it really helps to give Acura’s new ILX that premium car feel with its impressive combination of performance, ride quality, and technology. Factor in Acura’s strong reputation for reliability and resale value and you have yourself a direct competitor to Volkswagen’s GLI. We think once Acura gives this car the tech package and slightly more distinctive styling, they could have a winner on their hands. Until then, the ILX will continue to appeal to more of a niche buyer.
