This was an original idea. Original to me anyway.

WARNING: This video is for demonstrational, educational, and entertainment purposes only, and is not intended to be duplicated. Concentrated solar energy can reach temperatures in excess of 2000ºF, and produce UV radiation that could damage eyes. Glass bottles should not be exposed to these extreme heat/pressure conditions as they pose risk of serious cuts and injury upon failure of the container.

Project History & More Info:

For this demonstration, I used the “Solar Scorcher” made in a previous project (http://youtu.be/XFw7U7V1Hok) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.

I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.

I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.

My guess was that the bottle top would shoot off at high speed. But what actually happened took me by surprise, and took me 2 days to clean up the yard.

MUNCHIES: Chef’s Night Out with Coal Vaults

In a former Korean gambling den underneath the streets of London’s Soho neighborhood, we met up with Coal Vaults’ executive chef, James Knox Boothman, head barman Jerome Slesinski, and owner Martyn “Simo” Simpson. After cooking pulled rabbit, scallops, and sea bass—and mixing some unique white chocolate cocktails—we jumped into the “space bus” and hit up Shanghai Dalston to polish off some of London’s best dim sum before heading down the road to restaurant,  A Little of What You Fancy to meet James’s mentor, Elaine, over padrón peppers and blood orange salad. The last stop was over at Milroy’s, one of Soho’s oldest whiskey shops, to pick up a bottle before a triumphant return back to Coal Vaults for fire breathing, knife throwing, and slow roasted lamb that was cooked in hay.
