Project inspired by: I was challenged by Jesse Stay to make a video or pay $100 to ALS within 24 hours.
Even though I did the challenge, my wife and I went ahead and donated the $100 anyway. Hope it helps!
About this experiment:
While Dry Ice itself is extremely cold, there isn’t much risk of the water getting much colder than freezing, for obvious reasons. The water will freeze to ice before the temperature can really drop any further.
My reasoning for being ok with this approach was that as long as there was water in the bucket, the temperature should be at or above freezing.
The thing to watch out for are the chunks of ice and dry ice that are cold enough to cause frost bite within seconds. If these get stuck next to your skin, it can be very painful.
I had a piece of dry ice sitting on the back of my neck for a few seconds, and that resulted in markings on my skin that resemble a scar. I expect they will heal in time, but it’s a reminder that dry ice is dangerous and should be approached with caution.
This is why I can’t recommend duplicating this experiment.
