What Happens when Liquid Nitrogen hits Boiling Motor Oil?!! (#ad)

Motor oil is boiled to an extreme temperature, thermally shocked with liquid nitrogen, frozen solid, smashed with a sledgehammer, blended on high for 20 minutes, then put in the engine of my car.

More Info:

FTC Disclaimer: This was a paid set of experiments, sponsored by Castrol Motor Oil. Thank you Castrol!

Please note: All motor oil spilled in this video was cleaned up, and contaminated materials were disposed of properly.

Thanks to Cody Reeder from Cody’sLab for the original inspiration. (https://youtu.be/anCaLpLURno)

Lubricating oils have a very high boiling point (somewhere around 300 degrees Celsius or 572 degrees Fahrenheit) but I wasn’t permitted to let the oil reach it’s auto-ignition temperature and make a massive fireball. It’s the dry season.

So I set it off at 425ºF, which is hotter than the boiling point of vegetable oil, but not hot enough to burst into flame.

The contraption for releasing the LN2 was homemade and of my own design (makeshift diy engineering) and cost about $50 in materials.

The idea was to observe physics in action between extreme hot and cold, from a very safe distance, and it seemed to serve that purpose well enough for me.

After observing the oil that survived all the extreme tests, I didn’t believe the chemistry was affected enough to be any concern to my engine. So just for fun, I put it in my car.

Thanks for watching. I hope you felt the fun and excitement of physics in action!

Project History & More Info:

I saw an awesome concept for a concealment shelf floating around Facebook last year (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHAPk97Mp5s) and thought it was great! Until I looked at the price.

I wondered if I could build something similar myself and save some money.

It took 1 full week of prototyping, and I pulled more inspiration from a website called Tactical Walls (https://tacticalwalls.com) and came up with my own version that looks great, works awesome, and gives peace of mind when something important needs to be hidden.

My shelf uses magnetic locks to keep it closed, and as easy as it seems to open, for anyone who doesn’t understand how it works, it’s deceptively difficult to open, even for adults.

Project Inspired By: The Science Kits of 30 years ago.

WARNING:

This video is only for entertainment purposes. If you rely on the information portrayed in this video, you assume the responsibility for the results. This should never be attempted without adequate training and full understanding of all risks involved. Misuse, or careless use, of nitrogen triiodide may result in serious injury, death, and/or permanent damage to equipment and property. Check local laws and ordinances to ensure compliance. Have fun, but always think ahead, and remember that every project you try is at YOUR OWN RISK.

Project History & More Info:

4 years ago a guy named Ken told me he missed the days of real science. He said the kinds of science kits you would get under the tree at christmas had black powder, as well as an experiment you could do where you mixed a couple of chemicals that would dry out, and explode the instant they were touched, and that it would billow up into a beautiful purple cloud.

This fascinated me, so I spent some time on the internet researching what this chemical could be, and discovered it was called “Nitrogen Triiodide”.

The problem with making it is that it required iodine crystals, which seems you can’t obtain without putting your name on a list. But there are ways to make it.

Thanks to creators like NurdRage and Make, I learned how to synthesize iodine crystals, and adapted the methods to work with off-the-shelf chemicals.

I’ve been practicing this experiment for 4 years, and want to impress on anyone reading that this chemical is very dangerous and isn’t meant to be duplicated by the general public. Only by skilled, trained, and responsible persons who are in a position to take responsibility for any results their actions may cause.

(360º Video) Starting a Fire with a Sandwich bag

I took my family camping this weekend and started a fire with a sandwich bag, and water from the stream.

Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:

[✓] Ziploc bags: http://amzn.to/2cGi6WC
[✓] Samsung Gear 360: http://amzn.to/2cGj84Q

The video is 360, so if you’re on your phone, look around. If you’re on your computer, drag the screen around with your mouse.

For some of you this is probably as much fun to watch as paint drying. LOL! But it was a great experience we had as a family, and we wanted to share it with you. Not to mention this is actually a cool survival skill you can practice yourself.

I filled the baggie half way with water, then twisted it to form a liquid sphere. It’s important to make sure no air is trapped inside the ball.

For the initial tinder, I crushed up dry bark into a powder and let it smolder until it got smoking really well. Then I transferred it into a bundle of dead grass, and blew gently until enough heat built up to burst into flame. From there it was just a matter of adding small kindling, a few bigger branches, then enjoying hot dogs with my wife and kids.
