This experiment was inspired by Bill Beaty’s famous video http://bit.ly/IBPoorManLN2. If you check it out, tell him that Grant Thompson sent you.

WARNING: Dry Ice is extremely cold! (-78C/-109F) and can cause instant frost-bite to exposed skin. Isopropyl alcohol should never be ingested. Read all warning labels and be aware of all risks. This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, may result in serious injury. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Project History & More Info:

After I saw Bill’s video on making a poor man’s version of “liquid nitrogen” I tried it out for myself. I was successful in flash freezing orange slices, organic plants, and grapes.

It’s important to note that this is not real liquid nitrogen. This stuff is much more toxic and thickens to form a viscous syrup that sticks to the skin. I did try dipping my finger in it for a full second, and it is very cold, but it doesn’t bite as near as quickly as liquid nitrogen. But it does stick to the skin, so I just made sure to have a cloth nearby to wipe off with.

In my opinion, liquid nitrogen is much safer, even though it’s much much colder.

Bill’s version was a bit different, using plastic bottles to separate the dry ice from the alcohol. The thinking with that is good, but in my experience this didn’t really seem like a necessary step as long as there was enough free fluid to dunk the samples.

About a year ago I had filmed this demonstration smashing a slice of orange, and although the orange did smash like glass, it was difficult to tell in the video.

I re-filmed this demonstration from scratch, on my new work bench, but this time using gummy candy to show a bit more dramatic effect.

I was actually blown away by how these gummy worms shattered and blew pieces all over the room like exploding glass.

The gummy worms stayed frozen for quite a few minutes afterward, but when they finally thawed out, they left a sticky mess all around my work area.

I’d say it was worth it just to make you this video. I hope you like it!? 🙂

As the least expensive brand-new car you can buy in the US, the 2015 Versa sedan offers the space of a midsize car with the low-running cost typically associated with this class of vehicle. Just remember that the lack of features and the cheap interior plastics will be constant reminders that you skimped on your new ride.

This was an original idea, original to me anyway. Though I’ve never seen it done before, I’m not ignorant enough to believe I’m the first.

WARNING: Dry Ice is extremely cold! (-78C/-109F) and can cause instant frost-bite to exposed skin. Popsicles made using dry ice can be anywhere up to 5 times colder than regular popsicles and will stick to the tongue on first contact unless warmed first in a glass of warm water. This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, may result in serious injury. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Project History & More Info:

With dry ice being so cold, I simply wondered what would happen if we carved a groove in a chunk of dry ice and poured juice into it. Obviously it will freeze, but I wondered how long it would take.

For this experiment the juice took about 13 minutes to freeze completely solid. While that is impressively fast to make a popsicle, I actually thought it would have gone a bit quicker.

I suppose it took a bit longer because the cold wasn’t contained in an insulated container. The block was exposed to room temperature air, and in order to freeze the juice, the dry ice first had to freeze the bottom layer of the juice, then slowly work the cold up from the bottom. A slow process, and as you can imagine, the popsicle ends up being dangerously cold.

I dipped mine in a glass of warm water before trying to eat it so it wouldn’t grab onto my tongue 🙂

I am happy about the shape of the popsicle! It turned out great, and to get exponentially quicker results in the future, I might try placing a block of dry ice over top of the popsicle mould as well, then closing it off in a styrofoam container.

This was a fun experiment and the popsicle was delicious.

http://www.lynda.com/thekingofrandom. They approached me about a month ago asking if I could compile a list of some of my favorite internet tricks from their website, so I dug around and made this list: http://bit.ly/AdvancedTricks. I got inspiration for each of the useful tricks in my video from their website, and wouldn’t have done it without them. So special thanks for the sponsorship!

Project History & More Info:

I’m usually more geared toward hands-on hacks and projects, but these little internet/computer tricks were fun to play with as well. Some of them I already knew about and have been using since the beginning of time … like screen capturing and private browsing. But many of them were new to me. Like using Quicktime to record my screen, and downloading my Facebook profile. Who knew?

I have a screen capture program I purchased for $40, but I was having so much trouble with it, I ended up just using the Quicktime trick to record all the on-screen video for this compilation. It works great!

From a little quick research, I saw the “barrel roll” trick with Google has been known since 2010, but this was the first time I’ve seen it. It was new to me, and to my wife as well and we really liked it, so I included it for those other people like us who haven’t seen it yet.

In closing, I don’t expect these tricks will be new to everyone. In-fact I expect quite the opposite. But I do expect that the majority of viewers will see a trick or two that they didn’t know about.

I hope my compilation was fun to watch, and educational at the same time. If you felt inspired or learned something new, please like my video and share it with your friends. It will help make them smarter as well. Win/Win! 🙂
