Surprise Hits: 6 Tech Products I Didn’t Expect To Love

There’s so much going on in tech YouTube that it’s all too easy to forget the good stuff. The cycle usually goes something like this: product launches; product arrives; video goes up; video gets forgotten; on to the next product. It’s a fun hamster wheel, but it’s still a hamster wheel.

So I thought I’d take a second before the spring smartphone season to share with you some of the tech I’ve reviewed that’s been good enough (or just weird enough) to find a home in my everyday life. No sponsors, no BS. I’m MrMobile and these are the surprise hits from two years of reviewing: the Tech That Stuck.

Fitbit Versa Review: The Apple Watch Has A New Nemesis

The Fitbit Versa is a product you really need to use to understand. Seeing it on the screen or in a pamphlet, it’s natural to draw comparisons to the Apple Watch, or even to the old Pebble Time. Not being a fan of square watches or big bezels, I didn’t find a lot to like in the Versa when I followed its unveiling from afar. But when I took deliver on my review device and slapped it on, its featherweight build made me forget all about the casing design … and its excellent endurance allowed me to leave it on my wrist long enough to explore aspects of my health impossible to track with my usual WearOS watches. It’s been less than eight months since the disappointment of the Fitbit Ionic release, but the Fitbit Versa is already doing a great job of reversing that damage – and I’m going to miss it when I have to move on. Join me for the MrMobile Fitbit Versa review!

The LG Gram Is (Still) The Lightest Laptop Around

Making things thinner and lighter has been standard procedure in the tech game for years, and it’s not that exciting anymore when it comes to smartphones. Laptops, though, are another story. I’m MrMobile and while I already produced an LG Gram review last year, there’s a new crop of contenders for “lightest laptop” over at LG … and they’re every bit as featherweight as their predecessors. In fact the LG Gram 13Z975 model in my office has already been eclipsed by the newer 13Z980 line – but the point I’m making, that a two-pound laptop is as rare as it is precious – is ably demonstrated by even the older model. Join me for a fresh (and brief) look at the LG Gram, one of the lightest laptops of 2018, and stay tuned for more laptop coverage coming soon at MrMobile!

MateBook X Pro Review: Windows Gets A MacBook

Everyone says it, and everyone is right: the Huawei MateBook X Pro looks an awful lot like Apple’s MacBook Pro. But you know what? After using it for a month, I don’t care – and if you can get over the handful of downsides, neither will you. Because from its 91% screen-to-body ratio to its striking sound system to its splashproof keyboard, the MateBook X Pro offers a lot that its Apple-made competitor doesn’t … and it delivers on the fundamentals in ways few PCs can. Join me for the MrMobile MateBook X Pro review!

Galaxy S9 vs iPhone X: Part 2! [w/TechnoBuffalo]

[GALAXY S9+ VS iPHONE X]

PART 1 HERE: https://youtu.be/rAOf1Wg_Rh8

To anchor a collaboration years in the making, Jon Rettinger and I chose a comparison that never seems to get old. That’s right: for the ninth year running, it’s Galaxy vs iPhone time as we put Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ head to head with Apple’s iPhone X! In this break from the traditional MrMobile format, I visit the TechnoBuffalo offices for a podcast-like debate with Jon Rettinger on the merits of iOS vs Android, FaceID vs iris scanning, and simplicity vs customizability. We evaluate the iPhone X and Galaxy S9+ across five separate categories — and in keeping with TechnoBuffalo tradition, there are no cop-outs allowed: every category gets a score, and an ultimate “winner” is indeed crowned! At the end of it all, we flip the objective into the subjective with our own choices for which would find a home in our own pockets.

A comparison this big takes two videos to tackle, so brew up a pot of something hot and plant your phone in front of your face for Galaxy S9+ vs iPhone X Part 1 over at TechnoBuffalo, and Part 2 at MrMobile! Then be sure to subscribe to each channel so you don’t miss the next big smartphone reviews from each!

Two Days With The Tesla Model 3 (Made Me Want The Model S)

Fun fact: a Tesla Model 3 preview was one of the first two videos published by the MrMobile YouTube channel back in 2016! What’s more: I’ve never gotten over that experience. The skin-stretching acceleration; the futuristic features; the fact that it never needed a drop of gasoline – to a guy just starting a YouTube tech channel, Tesla’s Model S and Model X were the ultimate manifestation of mobile technology, and the Model 3 promised much of the same experience in a more affordable package.

Flash-forward to 2018: that Tesla Model 3 is finally rolling off the production line … and I’ve just spent two days behind the wheel. Not enough time for a review, but enough to get a sense of how many promises it delivers on. Watch the MrMobile extended Tesla Model 3 test drive to see where it succeeds, where it falls flat … and why it makes me want a Model S more than anything else.

Planet Gemini Review: A Tiny Computer With Big Ideas

Normally when I review a product, the question I’m trying to answer is whether it’s worth the asking price. But the Planet Gemini PDA was crowdfunded, willed into existence by almost 6,000 people pooling over $2 million on Indiegogo so that Planet Computers could build a modern version of the classic Psion PDA.

Not ringing a bell? That’s okay; the Psion only achieved wide popularity in Europe, and that was a long time ago. Still, the Psion captured many hearts by virtue of its legendary QWERTY keyboard – a keyboard faithfully reproduced by the folks at Planet and mated with a smartphone/tablet to become the Planet Gemini PDA.

Is it a smartphone? A tiny computer? A revived personal organizer? Bits of all three, really … and I’d be doubtful for its prospects out in the “real world” but for the little detail of its fully-funded status. So now that Planet Gemini devices are rolling off the assembly line and into eager buyers’ hands, let’s take a look at how it performs out in the real world! Join me for the Planet Gemini review on MrMobile!

The Car Of Tomorrow? My Ride In The Mercedes Concept EQ

If you’re one of my fellow smartphone lovers you’ll know that the word “concept” in a product name means two things: 1) it’s gonna be packed with some awesome and/or insane features, and 2) it’s probably never going to be released. Well, it’s not much different over in the world of cars. The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ certainly packs its share of speculative vaporware and a heaping helping of “just because it’s cool” whiz-bang eyecatchers. But it also brings a lot of useful features that actually will appear in cars of the future – including the Mercedes EQC for 2019, expected to be announced later this year. Join me at SXSW in Austin, TX as I experience firsthand the car of the future: the Mercedes Concept EQ!
