OnePlus 6 Review

[OnePlus 6 Review]

Never Settle. It is the core of the OnePlus philosophy – the mantra that, to some, makes it more than just another smartphone company. But OnePlus has indeed “settled” in one sense: it’s traded the brash claims of its youth for the calm consistency of maturity, churning out smartphones year after year that deliver on its central promise of value. So from a storytelling perspective, the OnePlus 6 is frustratingly predictable. Because what it is is what it’s always been: more smartphone for less money. So the narrative is predictable too: it’s still one of the best buys in wireless. I’m MrMobile; this is the OnePlus 6 review.

[LG G7 Review]

The LG G7 is tough to wrap my brain around, even given the space of two videos in which to do it. On the one hand, the G7 packs some truly compelling differentiators: the old reliable wide-angle camera on the back; the new Boombox speaker system rumbling away beneath the Raspberry Rose paint; the return of both IP68 ingress protection and MIL-STD 810G ruggedization. On the other hand, it’s shaved off some battery in the transition from the previous generation; traded OLED for LCD; and sacrificed the G6’s distinctive look and feel for a just-another-notched-phone aesthetic that’s fine … but really no more than that.

So is it worth your money? That all depends on what the price tag says when it comes to US carriers in June. I do some speculating in that department at the end of Part 2 – but until then we’ve got a lot of impressions to cover, from the offset earpiece to the still-there headphone jack. Join me for MrMobile’s two-part LG G7 review, stretching from the shores of Jeju Island to the back alleys of Google I/O!

Nintendo Switch Review Re-Do [2018]

[NINTENDO SWITCH REVIEW RE-DO 2018]

You don’t need me to tell you that the Nintendo Switch is a blockbuster success; all you need to do is look at the numbers. Thirteen months after its debut, Nintendo’s new console has sold about 18 million units, putting the company’s profits up 500% year-over-year … and keeping the Nintendo Switch price firm at the same $300 it launched at. But while the console world and the smartphone world are two very different domains, the question we’d ask about a Galaxy S8 still apply to the Switch: should you still buy one today, this long after its launch? What light can the growth of its ecosystem shed on its future prospects? And what accessories have proven themselves valuable after a years’ worth of usage? Those questions and more answered above, in MrMobile’s Nintendo Switch Review Re-Do for 2018!

OnePlus 6 Hands-On: Speeding Toward $600

[ONEPLUS 6 HANDS-ON]

“From where I’m sitting, this is the last time the company can hike its prices without a significant upgrade in design or camera performance.” That’s how I closed out my review of the last OnePlus smartphone, the OnePlus 5T released in November 2017. Well, wouldn’t ya know it: the OnePlus 6 (announced just moments ago) features an upgraded design, better camera specs, and –yes– a little price hike to go with ‘em. Does the OnePlus 6 bring enough of a boost in quality to justify a price point nearly double the OnePlus One’s of 2014? The full conclusion will have to wait for the OnePlus 6 review coming soon; for now, check out my early impressions of the device in the MrMobile OnePlus 6 hands-on!

Android P Hands-On: Swipe Right

The next version of Android is here, and if you use a phone that doesn’t have the Apple logo on the back, this software brings big changes to the way you use it. Namely, a gesture-based interface that recalls the very best of webOS (and, yes, is clearly meant to battle the iPhone X), as well as a bunch of expected improvements from power management all the way up to the volume slider. From Google I/O in Mountain View, California, I’m MrMobile – let’s go hands-on with the Android P Beta!

[HUAWEI P20 PRO REVIEW]

Confession time: I never really liked Huawei’s P-series phones. They’ve never been released in the US, and they’ve usually lagged behind the company’s Mate line in features I prioritize. Well, the P20 Pro changes all that, with an insane triple-camera system that has me more excited for a phone than I’ve been since the Lumia 1020 back in 2013. It’s still not slated for sale in the USA, but this time, that wasn’t going to stop me. Join me for the MrMobile edition of the Huawei P20 Pro review!

Kindle Oasis Review: The Bookworm’s Best Bud

The idea of a deluxe e-reader is almost an oxymoron, up there with “hot ice and wondrous strange snow.” The popular notion is that if you have enough money for something like the Kindle Oasis you probably already own an iPad with the Kindle app on it – and if you don’t, then you settle for a more affordable Kindle that gets the job done almost as well. But having spent 2 months with all the conveniences of the 4G-enabled Kindle Oasis, I have to say I’d have a hard time going back to any other e-reader. I’m MrMobile and this is the Kindle Oasis
[2017] Review.

LG G7 Review [Part 1]: ThinQing Out Loud

[UPDATE: Part 2 is now live here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUFmvDvmagc]

The LG G7 has had a long and strange road to release, at least from an outsider’s perspective. A flurry of reports back in January indicated that LG would delay the launch of its newest smartphone; that it might ditch the “G” branding entirely; even that it was considering redesigning the flagship “from scratch.” Well as it turns out, only one (and a half) of those predictions panned out: the phone was indeed delayed from its expected February release until May, and while the G brand remains, it’s now augmented by the “ThinQ” suffix LG is slapping on all its AI-enabled products.

Sadly, the rumor that the company would ditch the iterative approach in order to completely rethink its smartphone strategy proved false: the G7 is an LG phone through and through. That carries a lot of positives, from the superwide cameras to MIL-STD durability to an impressive new audio system – but it also means LG is likely to focus its marketing on the phone’s more buzzworthy (and far less impressive) “AI” features.

I’ve spent four days with the LG G7 ThinQ. Join me for the Initial Review / Hands-On – and stay tuned for the full LG G7 Review coming soon!

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Review: A Tech Bag Worth Saving For

To be honest, I’ve never considered spending the kind of money on a bag that Peak Design asks for its Everyday Backpack. But then again, I’ve never had a backpack that’s this attractive, well-thought-out, and waterproof to boot – and I can’t name one I’d rather carry right now. So if you value thoughtful design above all (and you’re willing to put up with the few downsides) the Everyday Backpack is indeed worth saving up for.
