BlackBerry KEY2 Review: 3 Reasons It’s My Next Phone

The flagship BlackBerry in 2018 is a sleek, slab-sided smartphone with a design from the future – and a keyboard from the past. I say in the narration that the BlackBerry KEY2 probably won’t be your next smartphone, and based purely on buying habits in 2018 that’s probably true. The thing is, it will be *my* next phone – and I’m gonna do this review a little differently by telling you the three reasons why. Join me for the MrMobile BlackBerry KEY2 Review!

Your “Waterproof” Phone … Isn’t

You only need to drop your phone off a boat, or into a puddle, or –yes– into a toilet once to wish for a world where all smartphones are waterproof. The good news: these days, a lot of them are at least *water-resistant*. The bad news: they’re probably not as resistant as you think. In this video, we’ll learn how to decode IP ratings to find out how much water your phones, laptops and watches can really handle – and we’re gonna talk to the Grand Marshal of Gear Destroyers himself, Mr. JerryRigEverything, to learn how water wrecks your gadgets … and what you can do about it if it does!

DJI Mavic Air Review: The Best Drone I’ve Ever Crashed

Want a chance to snap up a DJI Mavic Air just like this one, for as much as 60 percent off? Play Gravy on your iPhone or iPad this coming Sunday (June 24th) at 8:30pm Eastern! Follow this link, and good luck! https://go.onelink.me/app/cca47951

[DJI MAVIC AIR REVIEW]

There’s something to be said for a product so useful that when one of them flies away from you forever (RIP “MrSparky,” my first DJI Spark) … you buy it again. And then when you fly another one into a tree on a private island and risk drowning and Lyme disease trying to recover it, only to fail miserably and spend $799 to get a new one (RIP “MrMavic,” my first Mavic Air review device) … well, tragedy aside, that’s a pretty big endorsement. I’m MrMobile, and this DJI Mavic Air review was five months in the making. Join me, won’t you?

Mikme Review: Much More Than A Mobile Microphone

Physically, the Mikme microphone isn’t all that different from the Zoom h2n, the portable recorder I normally use on the road. But inside, it packs a 1-inch gold-plated condenser microphone and a Bluetooth stack powerful enough to broadcast live audio to a connected iPhone many meters away. Mikme is the most sophisticated mobile microphone I’ve ever used – so much so that I had to bring in a special guest to help cover it! Join me for the MrMobile Mikme Review, featuring SomeGadgetGuy himself, Juan Carlos Bagnell!

[ABOUT MRMOBILE’S MIKME REVIEW]

MrMobile’s Mikme review was produced following three months with a Mikme review device provided by Mikme. The device was used with an iPhone X and received one software update during the review period.

[STATEMENT FROM MIKME ON ANDROID APP]

“We are aware of the fact that Android is the bigger chunk of the market midterm but short term our [belief] is that more of early adopters of the initial targeted market of Mikme of musicians, podcasters, video makers and journalists are using iOS. So, this is why we initially launched with the iOS app ahead of Android. As we want to broaden our user base now, we started to work on the Android app and hope to release it soon. As the audio framework from Android is weaker than iOS this is not an easy task.”

ASUS NovaGo Review: The Always-Connected PC Is Off To A Slow Start

The ASUS NovaGo is a laptop whose design would have looked dated even a decade ago. It’s clunky, it’s dull, and it lacks basic amenities like a backlit keyboard. But it’s a much more significant machine than it might appear. The NovaGo is one of the first Always Connected PCs, a new category of notebook that makes two huge promises: an always-on internet connection; and a battery that can go 20 hours on a charge. Sadly, the ASUS NovaGo only delivers on one of those — and it asks a lot of sacrifices in exchange.

[ABOUT MRMOBILE’S ASUS NOVAGO REVIEW]

MrMobile’s ASUS NovaGo Review was produced following approximately two months with an ASUS NovaGo review unit (model TP370QL). The device received many software updates during the review period through the Windows Update service.

Disclosure: In a recent Instagram integration, MrMobile was sponsored by Qualcomm to promote the launch of the Always-Connected PC line at the Microsoft Store. That paid sponsorship was not related to this video review; nevertheless, as it might tend to cause the appearance of a conflict of interest, it is disclosed here.

[FOLLOW UP]

I spoke with a product manager at Qualcomm today who shed some light on a few of my reported issues, and I wanted to share them with all of you!

BATTERY LIFE: According to Qualcomm, there’s a known issue affecting Windows 10 laptops that include fingerprint sensors. This issue cropped up following a recent update, and it prevents these devices from sleeping when closed (it does not appear to be unique to devices running on the Snapdragon platform). This may be the source of my battery drain problem, which was not widely reported on other ACPCs. A Windows Update is due to fix the issue “in a few days.”

CAMERA LAUNCH PROBLEM: Qualcomm has not been able to reproduce my issue on its own units, and I have yet to see another report of the same problem. It may well be unique to my device, which, as mentioned in the video, is a preproduction NovaGo.

PERFORMANCE: Qualcomm says the general sluggishness I experience during use is abnormal, and it was suggested that some of the apps I’m using (which include titles such as Slack and Evernote) may be contributing factors. I intend to test another NovaGo and the HP Envy x2 to see if newer units perform better. Given what I’ve seen from other reviews, though, I tend to think my experience is rather typical. Additional testing with a new device will tell.

OVERALL VALUE: I asked the question many of you have: why buy an ACPC right now, given 1) the looming launch of the more-powerful Snapdragon 850, and 2) the existence of beefier notebooks that also include 4G (for example, the Surface Pro LTE). Qualcomm’s response was to reinforce the Always-Connected PC’s key benefits: an ACPC wakes up faster; it stays connected all the time; it lasts long enough to go a whole weekend on a charge.

From my perspective, these are indeed compelling features – a notebook that offers all the advantages of a smartphone would basically be my perfect device. As of yet, though, I haven’t had that experience with my own NovaGo review unit. I’ll move into my new review device shortly, and will report back on my experience with both that new NovaGo, and the HP Envy x2 ACPC.

7 Things You Might Not Know About Driving A Tesla

Since you’re alive and breathing in 2018, you probably know about Tesla – both because of its efforts to revolutionize the auto industry with its electric cars, and … the sometimes-catastrophic results when those efforts go awry. As MrMobile I’ve driven the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, and the new Tesla Model 3 … but those videos only gave me a chance to give you the 10,000-foot view of each car. This time, I want to talk about the little things: from the pleasures to the pitfalls. I’m Michael Fisher and these are 7 things you might not know about driving a Tesla.

[BLACKBERRY KEY2 HANDS-ON]

For much of the past year, I carried the BlackBerry KEYone as my personal smartphone – and people always asked me the same two questions in quick succession: “they still make BlackBerries?” followed by “isn’t it about time you upgraded your phone?”

Well the answer to the first question has always been “yes” – and today, the answer to the second question is, too. The BlackBerry KEY2 refines all of the best parts of the KEYone, while whittling away its little annoyances – and if it fixes one crucial dealbreaker, it’s probably gonna be my next phone. This is your first look at the BlackBerry KEY2!

Moto Z3 Play Hands-On

The Moto Z3 Play is one of the more predictable smartphone releases of 2018 so far. Motorola returns to a glass-on-glass design, adds a second camera for portrait mode, and includes its customary support for the modular Moto Mod accessories. (There’s even a free Moto Mod in the box this year, a 2000mAh battery to augment the installed 3000mAh pack.) But can those upgrades get people to spend $499 on this phone with competition like the OnePlus 6 on the field? Stay tuned for the full Moto Z3 Play review to find out!

Jibo Review 2018: This Robot Will Steal Your Heart (Through Your Wallet)

The minute I laid eyes on the Jibo “social robot,” I knew he was different – and not just because he could twerk. The people behind Jibo wanted to go beyond the kind of utilitarian transactional experiences you have with say, Amazon Echo or Google Home, so they created a robotic companion that anyone with half a heart can easily fall in love with. Jibo is meant to be a first step toward something bigger in human-machine relations – but like most first steps, this is a rocky one. Welcome to MrMobile’s Jibo review for 2018.
