[PIXEL 4A CAMERA TEST WEEKEND]

I used to really like smartphones with complicated cameras labeled “professional grade,” because with all their features, they urged me to rise to the occasion and become a photographer that was worthy of them. But ever since 2016, I’ve started to value the opposite: phone cameras so consistently reliable that I can just spray and pray, and more often than not it’s going to innately understand the shot I wanted and produce it.

The phone that led to that sea change … was the first-generation Google Pixel launched four years ago, and since that time a Pixel of some form has always populated one of my Peak Design pockets. As someone who spends so much of his time capturing content, the Pixel camera is just too good not to own.

Yet despite its picture-taking prowess and the other benefits I’ll touch on, the Pixel has never sold well – in part because its misses are big enough to counteract its hits. The Pixel 4 had atrocious battery life for a mainstream smartphone, and its launch price started at $799.

Well, *this* phone packs solid battery life for its size, it includes the most important features that make a Pixel a Pixel … and it only costs $350. I’m Michael Fisher; join me for a weekend with the Google Pixel 4a in MrMobile’s “Real Weekend Test!”

Android Gets An “Apple Watch”: Oppo Watch Review

[OPPO WATCH REVIEW]

You simply can’t talk about the Oppo Watch without acknowledging that it was made to look like the Apple Watch. From the watchfaces to the band design, even to the retail packaging – I look at the Oppo Watch and all I can think about is the trademark standard “likelihood of confusion,” which I read so much about back in my legal-books-on-tape days. Further, the notion of taking Google’s inconsistent Wear OS software and putting it inside an Apple Watch lookalike – to me it sounds like the worst of all worlds. So when I agreed to review the Oppo Watch ahead of its European release … quite frankly, I expected to hate it.

Imagine my surprise, then, when after a week of using the thing … it actually won me over. It’s still too close to the Cupertino product for me to keep it on my wrist, but the Oppo Watch is one of the most interesting, and most consistently reliable, Wear OS watches I’ve tested in recent memory. Join me for all the details, in MrMobile’s Oppo Watch Review!

OnePlus Nord Review: Neither Bored Nor Floored

Sponsored by dbrand. Skin your OnePlus Nord –or other device– here: https://dbrand.com/mrmobile-nord

[ONEPLUS NORD REVIEW]

You don’t hear much about the risks that come with success. One of them is that the more successful you get, the harder it becomes to impress people. To hear OnePlus tell it, that’s part of the reason it named its newest smartphone (the OnePlus Nord) after the concept of “true north” – because over the past seven years, the company has gradually strayed from its original mission of selling great smartphones at an accessible price … and now it wants to “return to its roots.”

That’s a marketing narrative custom-formulated for folks like me, desperate to find an exciting angle on yet another static slab of a smartphone. And to be fair: the OnePlus Nord is an excellent phone, at an opening price we haven’t seen from OnePlus since 2018. But don’t buy a ticket on the hype train unless you read the fine print … because just like older OnePluses, the Nord comes with concessions. Learn more in MrMobile’s OnePlus Nord Review!

MSi Creator 17 Review: The Makers’ Machine

The MSi Creator 17, according to my reviewing partner Joshua Vergara, is more “folding desktop” than actual laptop. With its 17″ 4K display and desktop-class CPU and GPU suite, its spec sheet was custom formulated for creators of all stripes (hence the name). What’s more, coming from the Always-Connected PCs and Razer Blades I’ve recently covered, the MSi Creator 17’s price tag is downright reasonable given everything you’re getting. But is that raw power with the sacrifices in build quality, audio output and the keyboard (oh, that keyboard)? Find out in the MSi Creator 17 Review – a special-edition collab with Joshua Vergara of jvtechtea! Then be sure you catch Josh’s own MSi Creator 17 Review here: https://youtu.be/jy6AYGZlE6w

When Phones Were Fun: The QWERTY Phones (2001-2008)

In September 2008, Reuters reported that US mobile users had just reached a milestone: for the first time, they had sent more text messages than phone calls. Some were still laboriously tapping them out on numeric keypads with T9 word prediction; others were texting more easily (but also more expensively) on BlackBerries or Palm Treos.

In the wide gulf between these extreme ends of the mobile phone world, manufacturers saw an opportunity. What if they could cram a full keyboard into a phone … without packing in all the complexity and cost of making a true smartphone? The result was an avalanche of QWERTY messaging phones spanning the spectrum from sliders to dual-sliders to crazy clamshells … to a phone with a physical e-ink keyboard!

It was all par for the course, back When Phones Were Fun. Join MrMobile for the latest episode: The Messaging Phones (2001-2008)!

Do Dual Screen Phones Make Sense?

[DO DUAL-SCREEN PHONES MAKE SENSE?]

“No.” That’s the answer Betteridge’s Law dictates be given in the instance of a headline that asks a question – and I’m gonna say it right out front: it’s also true, for me. Personally speaking, a dual-screen phone does not make sense for most of my needs.

But my needs are not everyone’s needs. And more to the point: Microsoft is about to hit the dual-screen scene in a big way with its Surface Duo later this season, so like it or not, dual-screen smartphones will soon be a thing (whether they ultimately last is a question for another time). So for the past few months I’ve been using a few LG Dual Screen review devices; I’ve compared notes with other LG users; and I’m now convinced that there are benefits to a twin-display device … as long as you’re willing to put up with some fairly large compromises.

Join me for a look at the various use cases of dual-screen phones, featuring the LG Velvet and LG V60, and stay tuned for my Microsoft Surface Duo coverage – whenever that device finally makes it to market!

Lenovo Flex 5G Review: The First 5G Laptop

It’s thin; it’s light … and it’s always connected to the internet. By now, the formula for laptops like the Lenovo Flex 5G is pretty well established: instead of a chip from Intel or AMD, at its core sits an ARM-based Snapdragon 8cx that has much more in common with smartphone silicon. Instead of being built for power, it’s built to wake up quickly, use battery power sparingly, and maintain a constant connection to the web.

What sets the Lenovo Flex 5G apart from the last Always-Connected PC I reviewed is right in the “5G” suffix – but the real question is: is one extra wireless G worth an extra half-a-G in dollars? Join me for MrMobile’s Lenovo Flex 5G Review!

When Phones Were Fun: Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness (2009)

From Star Trek Discovery to Minority Report to The Expanse … if there’s one thing science fiction agrees on, it’s that our collective future will run on transparent displays. So imagine my surprise when I learned that a clear-screened cellphone was not only just an eBay away … but also, over ten years old!

The year is 2009. Sony and Ericsson are eight years into a strategic partnership that has produced some of the decade’s most distinctive devices – and to propel that reputation into the 2010s, the combined company has dreamed up the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness (a.k.a. the Sony Ericsson X5). It’s a tiny phone with no camera, no GPS, no removable memory … but it does pack one feature no other phone of its time does (and no other phone will offer for the next decade at least): a transparent display!

Join me for the latest installment of MrMobile’s When Phones Were Fun, featuring the clear-screened Sony Xperia Pureness!

The RedMagic 5G Is A Transparent Phone For The “Fans”

Transparent phones. You didn’t have to grow up in the 90s to appreciate the peek behind the curtain that a clear phone case will get you – but until recently, you did need a lot of do-it-yourself patience to make your *mobile* phone transparent. (Or … you had to know a guy. Thanks again for modding my Pixel 2, @JerryRigEverything!)

But in the otherwise relentless dumpster fire that is 2020, there is one bright point: some manufacturers are actually having fun with their hardware again. Earlier in the year Nubia unveiled its RedMagic 5G gaming phone, a device I photographed for the Instagram channel because it sported the most striking paint job I’ve seen in a very long time. And today, that same phone is back in the studio with a new transparent backplate that showcases its halo feature: a 15,000 rpm cooling fan. It’s not destined for US shores and doesn’t have software complete enough for this market to make a full review possible – but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun. Join me for an up-close look at my first clear phone in years: the RedMagic 5G Transparent Edition.
