[ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS DUO 15 REVIEW]

Sometimes the easiest way for me to review something is to ask myself: “when the manufacturer takes this back … am I gonna feel compelled to buy one of my own?” And thanks to a thrilling year in PC gaming and a winter that looks like it might be long one, when it comes to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15, that answer is a strong “yes.”

I’m Michael “empty wallet” Fisher. Join me to see why I’m so eager to part with over $4,500, in MrMobile’s ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 Review!

I Broke My First Foldable [Into The Fold Episode 6]

This is a video that I never wanted to make, but let’s be honest: it was inevitable. MrMobile has officially broken his first folding phone, and of course, it’s the one Michael Fisher bought with his own money.

On this episode of Into The Fold: what happens when you wreck your Motorola RAZR 5G (2020) – and why it’s not a reason to distrust either Motorola or foldables in general … because my Razr didn’t break the way you might think.

[ABOUT INTO THE FOLD EPISODE 6: R.I.P. RAZR 5G]

This is the sixth in a series of episodes exploring the many facets of life on a folding screen. From the best foldable phones of 2020 to the bleeding-edge world of folding-screen laptops, Into The Fold is MrMobile’s showcase for the most exciting movement in mobile technology since 2007!

Episode 6, a list of lessons learned from MrMobile’s first broken foldable, was produced following 40 days with a Motorola Razr 5G / Motorola Razr 2020 retail unit purchased by Michael Fisher. Motorola sent two Razr 5G / Razr 2020 cases for inclusion in this video, but neither Motorola, Chase, nor any other company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

[WHEN PHONES WERE FUN: SAMSUNG UPSTAGE / SAMSUNG ULTRA MUSIC]

In the world of vintage tech reviews, it just doesn’t get any more 2007 than the opening sentence of PhoneScoop’s Samsung UpStage Review: “What if you flipped your mp3 player over only to find a cell phone on the other side?”

When Sprint announced this credit-card-sized curiosity in March of that year, the “music phone” category was already firmly established. My first dumbphone with an mp3 player was Nextel’s i870, released about a year and a half prior – around the same time Sony Ericsson’s famous Walkman phones took off (and Motorola’s infamous ROKR line failed to do the same). But it was Samsung, as usual, that took the concept to the brink of the absurd, dividing the two functions across the two faces of what globally it called the “Samsung Ultra Music” – and what we in the States would come to know as the Samsung UpStage.

Join MrMobile for a trip back to 2007 as we re-review this one-of-a-kind two-faced music phone in the latest episode of When Phones Were Fun: Samsung UpStage / Samsung Ultra Music!

Despite tablets, phones, and phones that turn into tablets … e-readers are still a big deal for those who seek escape or education in the world of books. But this video isn’t just about a new e-reader; it’s about the bleeding-edge technology behind it. Technology that suddenly makes every Kindle, Kobo and Nook of the world seem as antiquated (to my eye) as the old black-and-white newspapers they resemble. I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve just spent a week with one of the world’s first color-screen e-readers, the Pocketbook Color; join me for an up-close look at the E Ink Kaleido technology that powers it!

[LENOVO THINKPAD X1 FOLD: INTO THE FOLD EPISODE 5]

For the past four episodes of “Into The Fold,” we’ve talked about how the folding screen changes the way we use our smartphones. Well, nearly two years ago Lenovo posed the same question to laptop users … and today, we finally get to start answering it.

This is the third time the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold has graced the MrMobile YouTube channel, but the first time it’s doing so in final retail form. And while the full X1 Fold review will take more time, one thing is already clear: Lenovo has succeeded in porting many of the conveniences from the world of the folding phone – while also avoiding many of the pitfalls we’ve seen in that space in 2020 The ThinkPad X1 Fold’s display is more robust than the folding screens of its smartphone cousins, and at the larger scale of a 13.3” laptop, its utility is substantially greater as well. That’s thanks in no small part to the X1 Fold’s wireless keyboard and Lenovo Mod Pen, both of which have been thoughtfully integrated into every mode of the X1’s operation.

We’ll explore the setbacks that Windows 10 foists upon this experience in the full ThinkPad X1 Fold review. For now, join Michael Fisher to explore the question of what a folding display does for a laptop, in Into The Fold episode 5!

[iPHONE 12 MINI / iPHONE 12 PRO MAX ROAD TRIP REVIEW]

The middle of the road is where most folks find their mobile phone ideal, but Michael Fisher? That guy tends to track toward the extremes.

Last time I waded into the waters of iOS, it was to test the iPhone 12 Pro’s cameras in Philadelphia PA on the previous episode of my “Road Trip Review” series … a wild adventure from the midday cheesesteak to the midnight margaritas. Today, I’m taking its cousins –the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max– on a similar journey to a very different destination: the most nautical of all New England towns. When Phones Were Fun: Motorola PEBL (2005)

If you were old enough to know what a cellphone was in the year 2004, then you remember Motorola’s iconic RAZR flip phone. But what you might not remember is that the RAZR was just one in a series of “4LTR” releases throughout the mid-oughts. These included, among others: the super-slim SLVR; the substandard ROKR; the ultra-premium AURA (covered in episode 2 of this series) … and a phone that looked nothing like any of its siblings, yet blended perfectly into the 4LTR family – because it looked like nothing else on the market, either. On this episode of When Phones Were Fun, we’re heading back to the latter half of 2005 to unpocket the plump, pudgy and perfectly precious Motorola PEBL U6!

When Phones Were Fun: Nokia N95 (2007)

It feels like an odd time to bring back “When Phones Were Fun.”

After all, 2020 has been one of the most interesting years in mobile tech history: Motorola finally achieved a proper reboot of its iconic RAZR; Samsung built the best foldable ever with its Galaxy Z Fold 2; and even LG got in on the fun with a radical rehash of its VX9400, the LG Wing. As I said in my review of the latter: “phones are indeed fun again!”

But something tells me that, whatever social feeds might exist thirteen years from now, not many of those phones will inspire the kind of love-fest that 2007’s Nokia N95 does. With a bevy of firsts encapsulated within an iconic dual-slider design, the Nokia N95 wasn’t just the ultimate smartphone … it was also, in many ways, the last of its kind.

Join me for a look back at the Nokia N95-3, and stay tuned to the end of the video for an exclusive look at HMD Global’s Nokia N95 reboot … that never was! MrMobile’s “When Phones Were Fun” is back in business.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Review: Tablet Killer

Sponsored by dbrand. Get dbrand for your Fold 2 (or other devices) here: http://dbrand.com/mrmobile-z-fold-2

[Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Review]

Sometime in 2009, a few Samsung executives developed a taste for a particular red wine blend from the Terlato family vineyards in California’s Napa Valley. This was a blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon priced at $95 a bottle and bearing the label … “Galaxy.” Yep: it was this very wine, according to Geoffrey Cain in his book “Samsung Rising,” that inspired the brand name that has since adorned over 2 billion smartphones worldwide.

But it’s easy to forget that that first Galaxy S … wasn’t quite the smashing success that Samsung sought. Ask any phone nerd who was tracking tech at the time and they’ll tell you it wasn’t until 2011’s Galaxy S II that the brand started to gain traction. That trend would continue with the Galaxy Note: the first one mercilessly mocked – its sequel, universally lauded.

Maybe you see where I’m going with this. No matter how many videos I make telling you that the first Galaxy Fold is less fragile and more capable than you might think … the sad fact is, no product could ever fully recover from a launch as disastrous as that one. But the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 isn’t just a fix for a first-gen faux-pas: it’s a quantum leap in quality and capability that will change the way you use your phone … and make you think twice about ever buying a tablet again.
