There’s always a genre that rules the box office. In the middle of the 20th century, westerns were all the rage. As were bold and brassy technicolor musicals. After Star Wars came out in the late-70’s, Hollywood realized that science fiction could mean big money at the box office. Soon afterward, the quality of special effects caught up with the demand and big-budget action, adventure and fantasy films became assembly-line productions – created yearly for the masses. Then, in 1978, Superman: The Movie – starring Christopher Reeve – made us believe that a man could fly on screen. With CGI, the Spider-Man and X-Men films of the early 2000’s brought about a resurgence in superhero movies. We haven’t looked back since.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe engaged in a bitter battle for box office receipts, there will be no shortage of superhero films for the foreseeable future. But DC and Marvel aren’t the only gigs in town. Characters from a variety of comic book publishers will make their way to the silver screen.
