“Dolittle” just hit theaters and it’s full of adult-only humor to keep parents happy while their kids enjoy the colorful animals and otherworldly adventure. The film stars Robert Downy Jr as the famed animal doctor and features stars like Tom Holland, John Cena and Selena Gomez as his furry friends. It also has a few throwback moments to the 1998 film starring Eddie Murphy and the book it’s based on, “The Voyages of Dr Dolittle.” The film features a dirty-minded dragonfly who likes to play the field, a fatherless polar bear who has issues with the cold, a dog who wears glasses and makes butt jokes, and a huge dragon who has a bit of a stomach problem–just to name a few. Spoiler alert! Step inside the pitch meeting that led to Dolittle!

Robert Downey Jr. was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, and fans were really pumped to see what movie he’d jump to next after leaving the MCU. As it turns out, the answer to that question is DOLITTLE, a movie that now exists.

RDJ is the third actor to play Doctor Dolittle after Eddie Murphy and Rex Harrison, and one thing is for sure: this is a movie that now exists. Dolittle is kind of a mess of a movie and definitely raises a ton of questions. Like if each species has its own language, how are they able to speak to each other? How is Dolittle able to address more than one species at once? How is that child able to learn how to speak to animals too? What is the plot of this movie? Why is John Cena voicing a polar bear? Why is there a dragon and WHERE DOES DOLITTLE PUT HIS HANDS?!

Its a monster alright! I really wanted to love this one, but I just can’t. Maybe a bit too much marketing spin for its own good? And maybe they didn’t see the design through to either end of the spectrum, ie a true professional dive watch, or a stylistically very interesting everyday piece. While Marvel’s Black Widow gives our hero the solo story she deserved years ago — one of the more compelling parts of the film are all the new characters we get to meet, including David Harbour’s Red Guardian. But who is the mystery guy — and which side is he actually on?

Now, it’s easy to get Red Guardian confused with other Marvel characters — especially considering there’s been SEVEN different versions of the character over the years. There’s Dr. Tania Belinsky, the female Red Guardian who also doubles as a brain surgeon. There’s Josef Petkus, who served as the Red Guardian while part of the Supreme Soviets. The one hero you shouldn’t mix him up with? The Guardian. Also donning a red suit, Marvel’s Guardian is the Canadian counterpart to Captain America, who we can only imagine is a little more kind and gentle than the actual Red Guardian. Publishing wise, Alexi Shostakov was technically the first, but through some flashbacks and retcons — the first timeline based Red Guardian was Aleksey Lebedev. The character was shown in flashbacks from a Namor comic published in 1991.
