A remake of the spooky Japanese film Ringu, The Ring starring Naomi Watts was a massive hit in the early 2000’s. It not only made the phrase “seven days” a creepy part of pop culture but also inspired Hollywood to remake a ton of other Japanese films thanks to its success.

With the end of the Skywalker saga fast approaching, it’s time for us to talk about the future. But, to do that, we have to go back to the past. To Game of Thrones, of all places.

We know it’s painful to revisit, but the final episodes of the show were instrumental in creating the future of Star Wars. Here’s what you know: those episodes were bad. The Iron Throne being unoccupied/destroyed is a cop-out on the level of “it was all a dream.” The guys responsible for this cop-out, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, had been hired to write the Star Wars trilogy of the future. They got the job back in February 2018, when The Bungle was just a twinkle in their eyes. So you can imagine the uncomfortable situation that the people over at Disney found themselves in when they watched the finale of the HBO show. If D&D could do that to a TV show, imagine what could happen with the biggest IP in history.

So, like a cabinet minister who has said something out of line, the duo have “stepped down,” citing their busy schedules, the excuse they also made for the lackluster ending of GoT. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of LucasFilm, has registered her public disdain for the two very clearly and leads to some interesting opportunities for conjecture.

With the release of Star Wars: Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019, fans are expecting major reveals that may well redefine the Star Wars saga. We were all treated to an unexpected at the end of the first trailer when Palpatine’s laugh was heard and the title was revealed. While many fans anticipated a big connection to be made between the trilogies in this final installment, J.J. Abrams managed to keep Palpatine actor, Ian McDiarmid’s involvement completely under wraps. Once the trailer was unveiled at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration and Ian McDiarmid took the stage, we knew that the events in Rise of Skywalker wouldn’t exactly fall out the same way they did in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

What does Palpatine’s inclusion in this film bode for the story to come? What does it mean for his connection to all the new characters in this trilogy? Will The Rise of Skywalker provide a satisfying ending for this 40+ year old film series? And does bringing back a villain from the beginning prove that this franchise is running out of ideas or that they’re just getting started. A job at the CIA is probably nothing like the hijinks at a little paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but American Dad made the whole opening act of the “Flirting with Disaster” episode feel like an animated version of “The Office”. One hundred episodes before American Dad took on “The 100”, they were celebrating the one hundreth episode in a major fashion. In a creative — and slightly disturbing decision, the show decided to write off 100 characters — and even featured an on-screen countdown to keep track of each demise.
