Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker does a lot of things. Not only does it bring a close to the Skywalker Saga, but it also brought a ton of awesome easter eggs and little details to the screen that you might not have noticed upon your initial viewing.
Or your second, or third, or even fourth. Let’s be honest, Star Wars fans like watching these movies over and over again. So odds are you’ll probably see it a couple of times in theaters.

Disney has taken over the box office in recent years. Thanks to some huge acquisitions they’ve been able to cash in on Marvel by developing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on Lucasfilm by launching a bunch of new Star Wars movies and a TV show, and on Pixar by making a bunch of amazing animated films. They even recently acquired 20th Century Fox which is bringing a whole lot of exciting properties under the Walt Disney Umbrella.
With acquisitions being so profitable for them in the past decade, you have to wonder– what do they have their eyes on next? Well in terms of popular global franchises, there’s literally nothing more popular than everyone’s favorite pocket monsters– Pokemon. Could Disney line up to try and acquire Pokemon in the next few years? Check out this video to see why that may just be the cast.

Marvel movies have their fair share of incredible imagery. Oh, who are we kidding. ‘Fair share’ doesn’t even begin to cover it. With Marvel movies, we’re transported to new worlds and get to see individuals with incredible powers. There’s obviously a lot of special effects work that goes into these movies, but you might be surprised by just how much. In fact, until you look at some of the behind the scenes footage without the effects, you don’t quite realize just how much work is put into these movies.
For instance, with the first ‘Captain America’ movie, how exactly did they make Chris Evans so tiny? Turns out it was a combination of shrinking the actor and using a small, skinny double and replacing his face with Evans’. There are also the amazing Quicksilver scenes in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse.’ Did you know it took over a month to shoot ‘Apocalypse’s’ epic Quicksilver scene? And of course there are a number of elements added to all the Avengers movies, with most of the big action sequences being shot in studio spaces with tons of green screen.
But despite all the green screen, you’d be surprised just how much is practical too. For instance, the portals in ‘Doctor Strange’ were actually practical circles of light on set. The magical effects and sparks were added in post-production. And though Iron Man’s suit is mostly computer generated, there are elements that were built practically. Let’s take a look at some of the other amazing effects the Marvel movies have to offer.

Sam Mendes is the director behind such films as ‘American Beauty,’ ‘Road to Perdition,’ ‘Revolutionary Road’ and ‘Skyfall.’ His latest film ‘1917’ takes a look at two specific hours during World War I in which two soldiers attempt to deliver a message across enemy lines. Designed as a continuous one-shot sequence and with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins behind the camera, ‘1917’ is being hailed as one of 2019’s most impressive cinematic efforts.
You may be surprised to learn that despite the historical event it’s depicting, ‘1917’ isn’t actually portraying a real event. Its characters and its story are fictional. The events are, however, inspired by something that really happened. Sam Mendes’ grandfather Alfred Mendes served in the war. During his time as a soldier, he volunteered to deliver a message across enemy lines. It was a dangerous mission with little hope of his survival. And yet Alfred Mendes managed to find the other Companies and deliver the message without a scratch.
Mendes’ film might not depict this story verbatim but it’s clear he took a great deal of inspiration from his grandfather’s tale. Using it as the ‘kernel’ to drive his main story, Mendes crafts something that manages to call forth the horrors of World War I while celebrating the heroism of the men who fought in the war.
Let’s dive right in and take a closer look at the full story, diving in to divide fact from fiction and determine where some of Mendes’s ideas might have come from.
