With Fifty Shades of Grey coming out this weekend, it’s a good time to take a look back at the OG BDSM romance, 2002’s Secretary, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader. The relationship between the two stars is charged without being awkward. And the movie addresses tough subject matter while remaining grounded.

Well, as grounded as it can be, given the visually arresting production design, and the ever deepening BSDM dynamic to Lee and Mr. Grey’s relationship.
