Ariel Atom V8 vs 600bhp rallycross Citroen DS3 vs BMW HP4 superbike drag race – autocar.co.uk

Which is faster? An Ariel Atom V8 track day toy, BMW HP4 superbike or a rallycross Citroen DS3 with 600bhp?

Here we have three completely different ways of going extremely quickly in a straight line. Time for a drag race then. So what are the contenders? There’s the one-wheel drive BMW HP4 superbike, which arguably requires the most skill to extract speed from but has a ludicrous 757bhp/tonne power-to-weight ratio. Then there’s the two-wheel drive Ariel Atom V8 with 748bhp/tonne and the Citroen DS3 Rallycross car with only 577bhp/tonne but all-important four-wheel drive. Oh, and did we mention it’s wet?

What would you like to see go head-to-head in our next drag race? Let us know in the comments below

Ferrari 430 Scuderia: hero cars – autocar.co.uk

The Ferrari 458 Italia might be one of the world’s best supercars, but it owes its greatness to the Ferrari 430 Scuderia.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

When Ferrari engineers set to work on their ultimate mid-engined ‘baby’ supercar, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia was born. In the process, new technology was developed and lessons learnt which all contributed to making the next-generation Ferrari 458 Italia a world-beating supercar. The 430 Scuderia was the first Ferrari with its traction and stability systems fully integrated with its rear electronic differential, featuring adjustable settings via the steering wheel manettino. With 508bhp it still feels hugely fast and it’s more visceral than the 458.

Can a supercar beat a superbike? Can a Audi A1 outrun a Nissan GT-R on a wet circuit? Can a Porsche 911 slay a Corvette on the drag strip? Autocar pitches the giants of the performance car world against each other to deliver the all-important verdict.

Jaguar F-type vs Porsche 911 – autocar.co.uk

The Jaguar F-Type is a truly great sports car, but can it beat the iconic Porsche 911 Cabriolet?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

Having tested every version of the Jaguar F-Type, we know it’s a great sports car. What we are yet to find out, is if it’s good enough to topple the Porsche 911 Cabriolet. Steve Sutcliffe took the F-Type V6 S to our favourite Welsh roads, because with 375bhp and less weight than the V8, we reckon it’s the sweet-spot in the range. With just 345bhp the 911 looks weedy, but its 200kg weight advantage could reverse its odds.

2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 review – Autocar.co.uk

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI is a revelation. With the 227bhp Performance Pack fitted it’s even better.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI is the most capable VW to ever wear that iconic badge. Its revised 2.0-litre turbocharged motor gets 217bhp, or 227bhp if you tick the box marked Performance Pack, which also brings beefed up brakes. We recommend you do, along with the option for the E-Diff. This is the first electronically-controlled mechanical differential fitted to the front axle of any car, and it gives the GTI astonishing traction.

Jaguar F-type driven on road and track – www.autocar.co.uk

Jaguar’s quest for a successor to the iconic E-type ends with the launch of this, the Jaguar F-type. Steve Sutcliffe drives the range-topping F-type V8 S on road and track as he bids to discover if it could be a match for the mighty Porsche 911.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

The long-awaited successor to the Jaguar E-Type has finally arrived. Steve Sutcliffe is behind the wheel of the Jaguar F-Type V8 S, the range-topping model which can launch from rest to 62mph in 4.2 seconds and go on to a limited 189mph. Its sonorous 489bhp motor gets a helping hand from the lightweight aluminium construction of the F-Type’s body, while the driver sits lower than in any previous Jaguar. This could finally be a match for the legendary Porsche 911.

Mini Paceman JCW vs BMW M135i – autocar.co.uk

The Mini Paceman JCW packs a 215bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive. But it is priced identically to the brilliant BMW M135i. Can the Mini’s go-kart handling justify its price tag?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

The 215bhp MINI Paceman JCW is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine and gets four-wheel drive, for just under £30,000. That’s an almost identical price to the BMW M135i, the rear-wheel drive hot hatch with a creamy turbocharged 3-litre straight-six pushing out 315bhp. Steve Sutcliffe drove them back to back to find out if the go-kart handling of the Paceman can compete with the hot 1-Series.

What happens to a Lamborghini Gallardo when you switch traction control off?

Is it wise to turn off the ESP stability control? Steve Sutcliffe proves even a Lamborghini Gallardo can spin easily.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

You are driving along, and it seems like a fun idea to reach for your car’s ESP stability control button, so it’s just you in control of machine. But is it a wise idea? Steve Sutcliffe decided to find out, driving the hugely grippy and stable, four-wheel drive 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo supercar. Despite its amazing performance figures, he found that even at moderate motorway speeds, an awful lot could go wrong, very quickly indeed.
