Lotus Exige V6 Cup – road car vs race car – autocar.co.uk

Lotus is on its way back, and the proof is the Lotus Exige V6 Cup – both in street trim, the Cup S, and the Cup R racer. Steve Sutcliffe puts them to the test.
SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

For most people, the standard Lotus Exige V6 would surely represent the ultimate kind of sports car. It weighs little more than a box of feathers, its interior is quite extraordinarily uncluttered by unnecessary luxuries, and its supercharged Toyota V6 engine provides it with enough grunt — 345bhp — to embarrass all but the most ambitious supercar drivers. Sutters travels to Lotus’ test track in Hethel to drive the Exige V6 Cup S road car and the Exige V6 Cup R racer.

After a few moments thought, Steve Sutcliffe called in some assistance, booked a private test track, called in the slo-mo camera crew and set a series of light-hearted challenges for our intrepid supercar pairing.

How Thrust 2 became the world’s fastest car, achieving 633mph in 1983

October 2013 marks 30 years since irrepressible British businessman Richard Noble took back the world land speed record “for Britain”, driving his jet-powered Thrust 2 on Nevada’s Black Rock Desert at 633mph.

Since then, he has masterminded Andy Green’s supersonic record with Thrust SSC and now he and Green want to beat 1000mph in a new jet and rocket-powered car called Bloodhound in South Africa in 2015. Here, he talks about his achievements and explains how and why he’s still going for new land speed records to this day.

Mazda MX-5 TURBO vs Ford Focus ST: can BBR’s Mazda put Ford’s all-conquering hot hatch to the sword?

Can the BBR-tuned Mazda MX-5 Turbo overhaul the mighty Ford Focus ST? Mark Tisshaw takes to Cadwell Park to find out.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

The Mazda MX-5 is one of our favourite affordable sports cars, but compared with the current crop of high-performance cars, it is beginning to feel a little outgunned. With that in mind, Northampton-based BBR has developed a turbo kit boosting power to 285bhp — slightly more than the Ford Focus ST. Mark Tisshaw takes the pair to Cadwell Park to see if the Mazda’s extra grunt can overhaul the brawny Ford.

Alfa Romeo 4C first drive review

The Alfa Romeo 4C is the iconic Italian firm’s first true driver’s car for decades. Watch as Autocar’s Steve Cropley discovers how brilliantly a small turbo four can go and sound in a lightweight package.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

Without a doubt, the Alfa Romeo 4C is the most important Alfa Romeo for decades.

Alfa has spent many years being messed about by successive managements, every one with different half-cooked ideas, then quite a few more. Recently it has had its better-known values attached to B and C-segment hatchbacks – the Mito and Giulietta – because that is where the money is.

Yet no car in recent history has deliberately set out to embody Alfa values. The 8C Competizione helped, of course, but it was really only a concept made good. In truth, it is at least 30 years since Alfa Romeo has built a car for real people that directly and affordably expresses its values. This is the 4C’s mission and it is why it is so very significant – and why this is a must-watch video.

BMW’s M division has lifted the veil of secrecy on the new in-line six-cylinder engine bound for its upcoming M3 saloon and M4 coupé and convertible. The brand has revealed a potent twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre direct-injection petrol unit that produces an official 424bhp at 7500rpm and what officials describe as “significantly more than 369lb ft” of torque. And here, BMW’s DTM stars Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler deliver their verdicts after hot laps of the Nürburgring.

Road-legal 1.0-litre Formula Ford EcoBoost vs Audi R8, BMW M6 and an Mercedes A45 AMG

With 200bhp on tap and a kerb weight of 495kg, the road legal Formula Ford EcoBoost could be the future of sports cars, track cars, and even supercars.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar

You could argue Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost-powered, road-legal Formula Ford is just a marketing exercise. But from an engineering – and a petrolhead’s – point of view it’s a whole lot more relevant than that; an intriguing gaze into what might be achievable for sports cars of the future. In the tail sits a 200bhp version of Ford’s three cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, and although there are headlights, indicators and even a handbrake to justify the numberplates, to all intents and purposes this is a racing car that will never be raced.

Steve Sutcliffe pitches it against the Audi R8, BMW M6 and Mercedes A45 AMG to find out just how capable it really is.
