McLaren P1 hypercar details laid bare – exclusive

The McLaren P1 is the latest – and one of the world’s most advanced – hypercars. In this exclusive video, Autocar reveals the facts behind one of the decade’s most anticipated cars.

“One goal: to be the best driver’s car on road and track.” So said the scribbled notes from a meeting in 2009 when McLaren’s boffins sat down to sketch out a successor to the legendary F1 supercar.

Writing it down is the easy part, of course. Where McLaren is different is that it has turned that lofty goal into a reality. With McLaren, we have come to expect success, be it from its racing glory, road car expertise or myriad other projects to which it is applying its expertise.

The P1 is not merely a staggering car; it is also a standard bearer for all that McLaren Automotive stands for. It rekindles memories of the passion and performance of the F1, crowns the technical achievements of the 12C and underlines the levels of prowess that are being poured into future models. New car stories don’t get any bigger.

Can a supercar beat a superbike? Can a Audi A1 outrun a Nissan GT-R on a wet circuit? Can a Porsche 911 slay a Corvette on the drag strip? Autocar pitches the giants of the performance car world against each other to deliver the all-important verdict.

Ferrari 458 Speciale tested on the limit – is this the world’s best supercar?

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is the most focussed version of one of the world’s greatest supercars. And Ferrari says this incarnation of the 458 Italia is more fun than a Ferrari F40. Steve Sutcliffe pushes the Speciale to its limits to find out.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is claimed – by its maker – to be the most fun mid-engined V8 Ferrari ever. And that’s some claim if you look back through the firm’s catalogue. This latest incarnation of the 458, the most focussed yet, costs £208,000, makes 597bhp, revs to 9000rpm and weighs 90kg less than the standard car. It also has a new manettino setting that allows the driver to go sideways with the ESP still engaged. It is, by any stretch, a truly great supercar. But can it deliver on the promise of being more fun than an F40? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

McLaren MP4-12C vs Honda Civic BTCC racer vs Honda Fireblade British Superbike

We know the McLaren 12C is other-worldly fast. But how does it compare against a Honda Civic British Touring Car Championship racer and a British Superbike Championship-winning Honda Fireblade?

We took a McLaren 12C to Rockingham Motor Speedway to face its toughest challenge yet. Could it outpace a Honda Civic BTCC racer driven by former champion Gordon Shedden and the pairing of 2013 British Superbike champion Alex Lowes and his Samsung Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade? Which would set the fastest lap? Would the Civic’s superior grip make up for the power deficit? Would the McLaren be too much to match on the straight? Or would the ‘Blade offer a blend of light weight and high performance impossible to match? Steve Sutcliffe referees.

What would you like to see go head-to-head in our next drag race? Let us know in the comments below

The kind folk at Lamborghini lent us not one, but two Aventadors for the day: a Lamborghini Aventador coupe and a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster.

After a few moments thought, Steve Sutcliffe called in some assistance, booked a private test track, called in the slo-mo camera crew and set a series of light-hearted challenges for our intrepid supercar pairing.

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta vs Toyota GT86 – which is more fun?

The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Toyota GT86 are separated by £214,000 and 533bhp, but they are both best-of-breed front-engined, rear-drive drivers’ cars. So, which is best?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

They’re both handsome, reasonably practical cars. They both have an engine in the front sending power to the rear wheels. And while the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta will hit 211mph, the Toyota GT86 will ‘only’ reach 140mph. But the thing we’re interested in is this: can a £240,000 supercar thrill its drivers on track more than a £25,000 Toyota? Matt Prior takes both to Snetterton to find out.
