Alfa Romeo 4C vs Porsche Cayman vs Toyota GT86 / Scion FT86 – sportscar shootout

The new Alfa Romeo 4C has the right kind of credentials for a sports coupé, but can it really rival the indomitable and equivalently priced Porsche Cayman? Or how about the much cheaper, and less exotic, Toyota GT86?

The brilliance of the Porsche Cayman and the delicacy of the Toyota GT86’s handling is well documented. It is many years since Alfa Romeo build a truly great driver’s car befitting of the iconic badge. Autocar’s Steve Sutcliffe puts all three of the rear-wheel drive coupés head-to-head on track, in order to find out which one’s the best to drive.

The first major auto show of 2014 kicked off in style this week with some of the most eagerly awaited new cars in years. The BMW M3 made its world debut alongside its sister car, the BMW M4. They follow the standard M formula, but will use turbocharged engines for the first time.

Celebrating 50 years of the Ford Mustang, Ford launched an all-new model. It finally adopts independent suspension and will be built in right-hand drive for the first time. Not to be outdone, Chevrolet launched the new Corvette Stingray Z06, the most sophisticated yet, and a potential Toyota Supra successor has been teased — the Toyota FT1.

Not to be outdone, the Porsche 911 Targa is served up with a heavy does of retro-ness, while the Kia GT4 Stinger is a GT86/BRZ rival that looks like the shot in the arm that Kia needs. Mark Tisshaw hosts the Detroit motor show…

New Porsche 911 Targa revealed – see it (and its folding roof) in action

The new Porsche 911 Targa has been revealed at the 2014 Detroit motor show. Can this latest model truly evoke the spirit of the original as Porsche claims?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

The new Porsche 911 Targa will go on sale in the UK in May, with prices starting from £86,281. Coming with either a 345bhp 3.4-litre engine in the Targa 4, or the more powerful 395bhp 3.8-litre unit in the 4S, the top-spec 911 Targa can sprint to 62mph in 4.4 seconds, has a top speed of 184mph and can return 30.7mpg on a combined cycle. Porsche says it wants to evoke the styling and memory of the 1967 original with the new Targa, but has it done enough to succeed?

Riding shotgun in the new 2015 Porsche Macan SUV on road and off road

The new Porsche Macan will launch in Europe in April 2014, and is set to become one of Porsche’s biggest sellers. We ride with the development team to see if the Macan can live up to its badge.

The new Porsche Macan is planned to become the German marque’s best-selling model, and will launch in April to take on the likes of the BMW X3, and the forthcoming X4, and Range Rover Evoque in Europe.

The car may be based on the Audi Q5 platform, but company engineers believe they have done enough to make the Macan very different to drive. It is sharp enough, they say, for the Macan to be called a ‘sports car’. We take to the passenger seat with Porsche’s engineers to find out if the Macan can live up to the hype.

Is the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S the best Aston Martin yet?

Forget the Aston Martin Vanquish: the V12 Vantage S is Aston Martin’s real range-topper. It has a V12 at the front sending power to the rear, and very little interferes with the fun. Mark Tisshaw reports.

Any great drive requires three elements: a great road, great road conditions and a great car. And one of the greatest in 2013 was in the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S. Anyone who says there are no such things as decent driving roads in America has not been to a mountain pass a couple of hundred miles inland from Los Angeles. On these perfect surfaces, under cloudless skies and amid zero traffic, the V12 Vantage S showed us everything that we’d ever wanted an Aston to be.
