McLaren 650S Spider: “So much better than the 12C it defies belief”

The McLaren 650S Spider is more than a modified 12C Spider. A quarter of its parts are new and owes much to the mighty P1. Steve Sutcliffe finds out if it can still thrill.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

The McLaren 650S Spider costs some £20k more than the £190,000 coupe version, and it’s worth every penny. Why? Because it can do just about everything the coupé can do dynamically yet adds a sizeable hit of extra sex appeal to go with it. And that arrives courtesy of a folding hard top roof that can glide up or down in but a few seconds, and which transforms the 650S into an even more exotic creature on the move. Steve Sutcliffe puts it to the test.

New Nissan Qashqai vs Europe: Autocar’s 5000-mile road trip

We travel from Sunderland to Istanbul and back again in a brand new Nissan Qashqai. Autocar covers 5000 miles and 21 countries in 13 days to see just how good the follow up to Nissan’s best-seller really is.

The longest test to date of the all-new Nissan Qashqai takes Autocar from the car’s birthplace in Sunderland, England to Istanbul and back again. Why Istanbul? Because it bridges Europe and Asia and to the east lies the heart of the Nissan brand, while Europe is a key market for the Qashqai. Richard Bremner, Mark Tisshaw and Matt Burt make the journey.

New 2014 Mercedes C-class – does the compact executive class have a new leader?

The all-new 2014 Mercedes C-class is the most important model the firm will launch over the next few years. The exec saloon takes styling cues from the S-class, but the real question is can it outperform the BMW 3-series?

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-class is set to be here for a while, because Mercedes isn’t planning on replacing this fifth-generation C-class for another seven years. So, until 2021, this is the C-class, and if ever Mercedes needed to get a car right, and get it right from the word go, this is it.

It’s a touch bigger than before, both inside and out, but, crucially, it’s also between 70kg and 100kg lighter than the previous model. And it’s more aerodynamically efficient, which, in turn, helps it to be more ecologically efficient, too. But is it better to drive? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

Geneva motor show 2014: Race-bred Honda Civic Type-R concept

The new Honda Civic Type R concept has been revealed at the Geneva motor show. Its extreme styling underlines its performance — Honda is targeting a sub-eight Nurburgring lap time.

SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://smarturl.it/autocar

The Honda Civic Type R concept, as significant in its importance as it is dramatic in appearance, closely previews a production model that is just a year away from showrooms. The car’s extreme appearance bears out Honda’s claim that the Type R is not so much a hot version of a standard Civic as a road-legal version of a racing car.

It is more than 30mm lower than a standard Civic and distinguished by bulging wheelarches, a massive front spoiler and perhaps the most distinctive rear wing ever to see service on the back of the hatchback. Only the roof, front doors and unadorned rear tailgate are shared with a regular Civic hatch.

Ferrari says the new California T can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 196mph, both marginal improvements over the old model. Speaking at the Geneva show, Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo said its 8-cyl turbocharged engine is first in a quarter of a century. He said: “Maybe you remember the last one, the F40.” We do, very fondly.
