ZTE Axon M Hands-On: The Clamshell Is Back

The ZTE Axon M is a specimen not seen in the world of the smartphone in some time: it’s a clamshell. No, not a flip-top communicator of the Starfleet variety, but a side-flipping design previously reserved for fancy wallets. Some, like MrMobile’s esteemed thumbnail designer, might go so far as to call the ZTE Axon M a “folding phone.” But MrMobile himself would never be so bold.

For real though: in a sea of single-sided slabs, the Axon M is a legitimately interesting design. Featuring two 5.2″ displays bonded by a solid-feeling hinge and a thick aluminum midplate, the Axon M has the kind of heft that makes you take a smartphone seriously … and the double-wide screen real estate that’ll get you noticed even in Best Buy’s big-TV section. [ABOUT THE ZTE AXON M HANDS-ON]

MrMobile’s ZTE Axon M hands-on was produced following an hour with a ZTE Axon M review device on loan from ZTE. The device was a preproduction smartphone running prerelease software.

Additionally, the briefing venue had poor lighting which resulted in the inconsistent white balance in this video; the greenish blue hue you see on the display is a symptom of this problem and does not appear in person.

Surface Book 2 Hands-On: Now In Jumbo & Junior Sizes

For the past two years, the Microsoft Surface Book has sat at the apex of my ideal-Windows-device pyramid. When I reviewed its Performance Base upgrade last year, the Surface Book’s funky four-in-one form factor won me over, its vast capabilities making up for its ponderous size and prodigious price tag. Today, Microsoft reinvigorates its halo notebook with the Surface Book 2, a duo of devices offering the same look and feel of the Surface Book, but with revised specs and two available sizes.

The Surface Book is a special line of machines, and the Surface Book 2 is just the shot in the arm the portfolio needed. Microsoft calls it “twice as powerful” as the MacBook Pro, and the company seems to be targeting Apple even more aggressively than it did last year, retaining the Surface Book’s USB-A ports and SD card reader while adding USB-C support. That kind of offering seems tailor-made for would-be Windows converts like myself … and it’ll be a miracle if I get to the other side of my Surface Book 2 review without buying one. Stranger Things is such a great series and it really took everyone by surprise at just how good it was when it hit Netflix and, subsequently, our small screens in 2016. The story of a fictional town in Indiana, by the name of Hawkins, and the bizarre things that go on there really captured our collective imaginations. The cast was great, as were the characters they played, and the story was really interesting with an amazing retro feel (it is set in the 1980s, and is full of 80s references, after all). As a result, everyone was talking about the awesome science-fiction horror series – and that has resulted in a lot of fans of the show discussing their incredible theories about it. With season two just around the corner (it hits screens just before Halloween on the 27th of October in 2017), this video will discuss just a few of those awesome theories. The theories in question are; Eleven being intimately linked to the scary Upside Down dimension, Will Byers being a kind of human/monster hybrid, Eleven and "Monster Will" potentially having an epic battle against each other, Barb coming back as a monster, the Demogorgon being a weapon of the government, the monster in season two being Dungeons & Dragons Thessalhydra, the Upside Down being a future version of Hawkins or a victimised Hawkins from another dimension, Nancy Wheeler getting romantically involved with Jonathan Byers and, finally, Eleven being the daughter of Hawkins police chief Jim Hopper.
