The success of Joker and Venom has completely changed the way movie studios are looking at superhero movies. No longer are our caped heroes standing front and center. With Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad coming soon, we could see a whole slate of super-villain movies hitting the big screen. Why bother trying another stab at remaking the Fantastic Four when there’s such a better character to focus on instead? Doctor Doom stood in the shadows of both Fantastic Four franchises, serving as the main villain, but not getting fleshed out enough to truly becoming a compelling part of the films. Catwoman had her shot at a solo movie with Halle Berry’s disappointing cheesefest back in 2004, but there’s another DC vixen who could really shine with a solo story — and her name is Poison Ivy. Just the thought of Poison Ivy on the big screen has probably conjured some pretty bad memories of Batman and Robin, but let’s just pull that withered weed from the garden and start over. Despite the cheesy puns about ice, snow, and everything frozen, you cannot deny the dramatic possibilities of the Mr. Freeze origin story we saw glimpses of in the 1997 disaster Batman & Robin. Arnold Schawnegger’s portrayal of Mr. Freeze is pretty much a big joke now and has resulted in no other portrayals of the character on the big-screen, but he definitely has a great story to tell.
The Joker did a deep dive into the character’s psyche, backstory, and provided a whole new perspective on the madness behind him. But what other villains deserve a similar movie treatment? Between some Marvel juggernauts and DC villains who deserve proper big-screen treatment, let’s see who should go solo in the future!
